So who’s the powder Horn go-to Guy ? Guess I would have it on my right side. I see prices from 36.99 to 350.00. Don’t need any scrimshaw or collector type item. Anything special to look for ? Thanks.

My horns are by Tim Crosby and Ron Hess. Both are super makers and great gentlemen.

Stay away from the horns for $36.00. You will be unhappy later.

Just a head’s-up: Powder Horns flock together and congregate. In their natural environment they multiply quickly. Be ready for that. They are similar to my wife’s shoes in that respect. :-)

And yes, Art DeCamp makes some amazingly detailed horns too.

You may want to share with us your rifle type, period, area, etc as certain builders tend towards certain types of horns. All of these makers do it for the love of it. They make pennies per hour. I would expect a good lifetime horn would be in the $150 range. Fancier ones are more.

A horn is as personal as your wife or your gun. One must make their choice carefully as in the case of the afore mentioned.

Strict HC may not be exactly what you want any more then the bag you will be using. There is a pretty broad time frame for that gun. Talk with these folks that craft horns about what you are thinking. They are the experts....

I'll bet you could get someone who makes powder horns, make you a replica of that french horn for a whole lot less then $1,250.00

Here's a horn Taylor made for my wife - a Christmas present - 1975.

the 1 1/2 pound capacity Horn I bought at Dixon's Gun maker's Fair - 4 or 5 years ago.

Can't beat a regular cow horn for this time period, but I have one I made from an African waterbuck horn.
How it came to be used as a funnel in the "Oil House" on the old farm in Yorkshire I do not know! I rescued it as a kid and still have it.

Made one from an antler as well. And one from a goat horn as a priming horn for my matchlock.....
All OK but not for Longrifles.

Horns are just like rifles, you have to find a builder that you are comfortable with.

There are lots of good horn makers out there, but for me it's Wild Willy Frankfort.

Didn't know if you found what you were looking for in a horn. Not trying to toot my own horn here,

, and I'm certainly not one of the "go to guys" listed, but I do make and sell powder horns, and have a large right side carry plain horn that would be good for a smoothbore - that uses more powder than the typical rifle, And it is generic enough to fit in several timeframes. Its 17" around the curve, has an octagonal tip, poplar base with staple, is lightweight for its size, and has been lightly aged. In case your still searching, I thought I'd share this one for consideration. I'd take $130 for it plus $10 shipping. Bigger horns like this are getting harder to come by. I agree, buy American raw cow horn, Mexican horns are generally more brittle. Make a fun project that’s inexpensive and creative, lots of free info on how to proceed.
