Does anyone know if Sibley horns have a makers mark? I ask because I bought a horn that I liked at the TN KY Rifle show several years ago and the seller told me it was a Sibley but I am not sure how to tell.

Hi Dennis,

I can usually spot one of Scott's horns from pretty far off by the method he uses to "antique".

I am not sure if he adds a maker's mark or not.   

Can you post a photo?

I have one of Scotts horns. On the bottom side near the base plug is a small triangle with an S inside. The date is next to it.
You have to look for it to see it! Hope this helps

I have 4 of Scotts horns an they all have the triangle but they are very hard to see

I bought one from him once that did not.

I emailed him and he told me that he normally only marks the ones that are scrimshawed.  Not sure if that's changed.

I have a Sibley, New York Hudson Valley map that has a tiny, scrimshawed thunderbird with the date beside it located just above the lip of the plug.

Here is the horn that I was told was a Sibley horn. I have no idea, I didn't buy it because it was a Sibley, liked the horn and strap and the price was reasonable. Just curious. I looked for the "S" with date but could not find anything like that. I do remember seeing something down near the base right after I got it but it seems to me I thought it may have been a bird, can't remember and can't find it now.

The name on the end cap (or whatever horners call it" is A. W. Masf)
It has "Liberty

            April
              12
                Daye"

Also has "No King
                 But Jesus" With the "u"s looking like "v"s

Dennis I sold you that horn at the Knoxville gun show about 3 years ago might been 4.
 I guarantee you that is a Sibley Horn.  I bought it from Scott off the CLA site when Scott was listing a lot of his horns for sale.
I wonder if hes slowed down on making horns.  Don't see as many as once did.

It looks like Sibley's work to me. Have to put a magnifier on and look around the base to find their mark. They have turned out a lot of interesting work!

I still have 3 of Scott's horns and have looked them over with a fine tooth comb and can not find a makers mark on either of them.

 I sent Scott an email this morning on the horn, this is his reply:

 " I believe the horn is one I made, I never marked the ones that I completely did back in those days.  I do mark them now."

 Said he had kind of forgotten about the site and was going to try logging on.

I am glad to know I wasn't dreaming. I could not remember for sure if it you said it was a Sibley horn or it was like a Sibley. Also good to know who I got it from, had no idea it was from you. I remember it was at the show when it was still at the Museum of the Applachia. I like the horn and use it with my 54 cal hunting rifle.

That Is a very bonny and believable horn, Dennis.
