Angstat Finished -more pics
« on: March 21, 2019, 07:10:08 PM »
I've stepped out of my Pre-Rev. comfort zone this year, and stepped into the Golden Age for a change. I got some beautiful wood from Jamned last year that was only 2 to 2 1/8 thick that I thought was more appropriate for this era. It was old wood from the Wm. Buchele collection. I thought I would do something challenging that you don't see commonly represented. Peter Angstat's Pa. Dutch folk art style really grabbed me and looked fun! He practiced gunsmithing in Macungie Pa. (Eastern Berks Co.) very close to Lehigh Co. You can see some similarities. It has a Rice .45 x 42" swamped barrel and Chambers Deluxe Siler flintlock.
Here's some pics of my progress:

Beautiful work, especially the forearm and the lion on the cheek side of the butt.  Lots of talent!

Tom,
That gun is really looking great!  You have definitely captured the feeling of Peter Angstat in your carving and buttstock architecture.  Looking forward to seeing the completed project.

Angstat made some really funky folky rifles but I like that kind of gun. Nice job.

OK, curiosity has overwhelmed me. What did you settle on for drop at comb, drop at heal and length of pull?
Looks like your really nailing this one.

Mike, the pull is 13 3/4"  drop at heal is 3 3/4" and drop at comb is 1 1/8". Works for me! It weighs 8 lbs.

That 1 1/8" at the comb doesn't bite? I don't think  I could get down on the sights. I have wanted to do this gun but was intimidated by the lack of drop at the comb.

I haven't fired it yet. There are P.A. rifles without that big nose at the comb. It can be lowered like some Lehighs. It's too late to change this one though. I have to slide my cheek down the stock about 1/2" to 1" to line up the sights.

Tom, you have a gorgeous rifle going there.  If I had an extra room, I'd invite you over to work on my Lehigh/Rupp concoction.  Love that engraving!
