Taylor's new, Rebuilt Shop
« on: June 23, 2009, 04:59:31 PM »
I'm just back from fishing - took a spill out of the boat with my Olympus & it still seems to work (after painstakingly trying to dry it out in camp).  Here's Taylor in the shop yesterday morning. His 'new' walnut stock and .25 barrel ready for starting - (sort-of)

Rich, the truth is that almost anything IS what gets done in this shop.  I make my living here, and it is as diversified as it needs to be to make a buck.  I have to say that I am really enjoying the new shop...brighter, better organized, insulated, more room...yup, much better.  I hope to get started on another rifle by late fall.

Taylor, you sound like me...can't seem to get an gunwork done unless there is snow on the ground! Haven't ouched the Bucks Co .40 cal on my bench in over a month. TOO much to do right now.

Nice shop but where is the "spot" where the real gun work is done?  I see one vise  and not much of any supports? Have admired your seemingly "easy", artistic  way of building MLers  and wish you many pleasant hours in your new shop. Also your generosity of sharing your skills via your excellent photos is much appreciated by the less endowed, including me....Fred

Well I sure appreciate your good wishes guys.  And believe me, I've gleaned much more from this great family than I've contributed.  Too, I appreciate your saying so, Fred.

Now, wherre to start.  Daryl wants me to do the T. Allison .25 cal first...that's because he's a varmint shooter m'thinks.  But I have all the stuff for two other rifles...A. Verner and a JP Beck smooth rifle, both in .50 cal.

'Course, if he was earnest at building another hunting rifle, he'd build another English Sporting rifle, in 16 or 14 bore - that's the varmint hunter in me talking - I like the big varmints too ;D ;D ;D ;D.

I too need lighting like that in my shop - all round, both sides of the shop, the airplane side and the gun building/loading side along with the lathe and drill press end.  The other end is storage for extra loading and gun books and magazines.  I need a bigger shop, or perhaps just some organization - like Taylor's new shop.

Taylor, are you standing in a hole or is the ceiling about nine feet high?! Gotta love a high ceiling in a basement shop. Looks great!

Ben, it's got to be an illusion.  After reading your question, I had to go down and measure the thing.  It is 7' 10 5/8" to the bottom of the floor joists.  I can reach them easily without straining.  With some things hanging from the "ceiling" sometimes it is not high enough.

It's only about 6'3" to the bottom of the floor joists in my basement - i guess yours just appears enormously high to me!

The bench looked too clear to me.  How can you make anything without working around the usual clutter?

I am worried for you Taylor; a clean organized shop is a sign of a disturbed mind  :>)  :>)

Well Doug...aside from Daryl 'n LB, you know me very well.  What you are all seeing is a newly organized shop that hasn't yet produced a longrifle, and it shows.  Do not despair.  When the snow flies in a few months, it'll be a happenin' place.  Since we're over the summer equinox, winter's comin'!!  And hunting season.  But first, Dixon's and Heffley.  What a life we lead!!

Ahh ---- Fishing then Dixon's, THEN a Brother Fly Fishing trip for Sockeye Salmon, then Hefley, then hunting and maybe some more fishing intertwined - We do lead a charmed and blessed life for sure.

Or break 'em. That has got to be the most complete shop I have seen. There is even a box of rocks on the shelf  to the left of the band saw, behind belt sander. ???

Well yaaaa!  Doesn't everyone have rocks in boxes on their shelves?  I have wooden boxes of them under my bench too.  Obsidian, flint, chert, Novaculite, black Dover flint, jasper, etc.  I knapp (when I can't stay awake!)

heh, heh, heh. Ain't he the funny one - well, sometimes.

That's only 1/2 the shop, boys. The lathe, milling maching, drill press and the hot-box are at the other end, along with hundreds of arrows (I think still there).

Taylor, wth is that flat surface the vice is attached to?! ;)  Don't think I have anything like that in mine!  If it's there, it's been buried for 7 years!  :D  Nice looking "den"!  :)
