Tapered barrel inlet question
« on: March 30, 2019, 04:56:06 AM »
Evening all, I recently picked up one of Don Stith's part sets for a J&S halfstock in 58 caliber.
I do have a question on tapered barrel inletting. All the references I have seen are on how to accommodate the taper on the side flats.
I have found no information on how to deal with the slight vertical taper that the bottom flat will have.
Does one just keep nibbling away starting at the rear and work your way forward or?
Looking forward to the thoughts of the learned.
Thank you in advance.

Not too difficult at all.  You want half of the side flat to show above the wood, so take the total distance from bottom to top flats.  Divide it in half - that will be the total depth of the inlet at that point.  As it is tapered, simply repeat at several spots along the barrel.  Note that some schools of building will want more or less of the barrel to show; for a Lehigh, as example, 2/3 of the side flat will show.
If it is a swamped barrel, from the breech forward it will taper smaller, then a little shy of the muzzle it will start to widen out again.  Again, measure at several points. You can use a fine point pencil, make a mark on the side of the barrel inlet, and write down what the depth will be at that point.
Good luck on your build - keep us posted.

I mark a line halfway down the side flats. Don't inlet at the muzzle but inlet the rest. The breech end will slowly drop down. When your half way line is parallel with the wood, then inlet the whole barrel evenly. I have never inlet a tapered barrel, but it works with swamped ones.

One of the easiest ways to locate the bottom flat in any barrel inlet is to use either the 90 degree angle on a drafting triangle or cut yourself a 90 degree angle out of metal, wood or plastic.  Once you have the sides of your barrel inlet cut in a bit, you place your 90 degree angle tool across the edges of the top of the barrel channel.  Keep inletting until you have 3 points of contact.  When your tool contacts both sides of the inlet as well as touching the bottom of your inlet you will have obtained the proper depth for the bottom flat.  Once you have established the width and depth you can continue on defining all the flats.  Happy inletting.

^^^ Was just going to ask for a bit of a clarification on Dave's technique and tool. Having a difficult time visualizing it.

Ron it was my point on the not following expert advice. Sometimes you just don't see what they ( experts ) are trying to explain to us. But a picture truly is worth a thousand words. Well at least to me.. Oldtravler

I don't feel that would be appropriate on a public forum. Give Don a call, he will go over what you want and give you pricing.
Great guy to chat with- he has a wealth of knowledge he is happy to share.

Rich- thank you for the pic, makes perfect sense. Sometimes the solution is so simple it is elegant.

My understanding is that the barrel comes pre-inlet on Don’s kits.  I’d give him a call with any questions.

True statement, sort of like asking what the definition of "Big" is. Ask a Microbiologist he will give you an answer.
Ask a tugboat captain and he will give you an entirely different answer.

This stock is generously undersized on the barrel inlet, about .025 at the breech and .050 at the end of the forearm.
Gives me plenty to work with.

When I first bought my machine I met a guy from Idaho who had had the same machine.  He tried to inlet barrels with the stocks mounted on centers and told me that the middle of the stock would vibrate so much that he was getting 1/8" gaps in the channel.  The first thing I did when I received my machine was to build the insert (green section) to stabilize the stock.  When I set up a stock to be inlet I mount it at the front and rear and use those screws to setup and position the stock.  Once the position is set, I use the intermediate screws to stabilize the stock.

And all this time you probably thought these round spots were some sort of alien markings since my inlets are (shameless plug) out of this world.  I digress.  Time to go back to the shop and finish preparing for Knoxville.
