I really like that. You did a wonderful job. We all appreciate the more ornate designs. But a well executed piece of simpler design is often just as pleasing.

Thanks for the compliment mike, rollingb, I coated the whole horn, base plug and all with brown fieblings leather dye. I used my heat gun to attempt to set the dye. Then I carded it back. After heating the dye on the base plug, I buffed it back with some 0000 steel wool and repeated, when I got the tint I desired, I let it dry and polished it with a coarse rag. Then applied some mink oil and drilled the holes for the staple. For some reason I really like the simple utilitarian horns and that’s what I make. I’ve made some really fancy ones... but I like the simple ones that the common, every day folk would have used. Thanks again for the comments!

Here’s one I made for my dad for Father’s Day, using the same process except I didn’t use heat in  the process. It’s not super fancy but I did engrail it.

Very nicely done. Warmth of color and the simple elegance of your throat shaping give the horn soul.

That horn looks like it will swallow most of a pound of powder. When I'm shooting my Bess, I like like lots of powder. Do you have    a photo of the horn before it was transformed?

I really like the looks of that horn. There is a certain beauty to plain horns.

I think the one thing that has the biggest impact on how a horn looks is how much time and effort a person spends on working the tip down to proper proportions. You did a nice job on the tip of this horn. And it looks better Because of that.  Keep up the good work.
