Creative Ideas Needed!!!
« on: June 25, 2009, 10:34:26 PM »
I'am looking for some "Ideas" on what i can use, other than an actual cone lathed out on a machine, (which i don't have)  to form the butt end on powder horns. I was told that most of you guy's here would be over flowing with some ingenious ideas and boy do i need them. So please let me hear what you got... :)

Thank you,
Danny

Clay flowerpots (unglazed is best) or a large shotglass is what I have used.  The clay flowerpots work very well, are tapered and come in many different diameters.....

Try making one from a tapered square . Cut on a band saw .
Take it from 4 sides to 8 ..etc. etc.
Finish this with files , then sand paper or srapers . Should get you what you need .
It's slow but your only making one .
Thanks , Steve

Look for an old bed post or table leg at the salvation army or a thrift store and cut off what you don't need.

Flower pots are a good idea but I like something I can tap in, find an old wooden baseball bat and saw it off in 4" increments.  If you drill a hole in the bottoms and put a piece of stout dowel in it you can clamp it in a vice and use it to work the horn.
I'm sure Gary Elsenbeck will be here shortly, he had some sizer for sale at one time.

Yeap Randy said i should give him a shout about this, but that baseball bat idea sounds real good and serves 2 purposes. I would still like to see what Gary has got also.... :)

Thank you, Tim C.

I have to do a couple of these cones next week; drop me a line with the dimensional range you need and I'll knock one out.  Yours for postage . .

I keep my eyes peeled for sizers all the time.  One other source is your local "closeout" store.  I have purchased a few "imported" glass bottle sizers for less than a buck that once held sparkling water, tomato juice, salad dressing, etc.  My favorite sizer is a narrow handle-less coffee cup from an Ikea store.  I rough these up a little with my belt sander to help them grab the horn better.  I also have used the flower pots.  They are good for "keeping" your horn round while you are not working on it, and/or before you put the base plug in.  I usually size more than one, so its nice to have multiple sizers, or flower pots after the fact, for that.

Well i see what you guy's meant by the flower pots. I found some at our good ole Home Depot and they look like they will work great. I bought 3 different sizes and some spares. I spent a total of about $6.00. I've got some raw horns coming any day now and i can't wait to get started on them......Thank you all for your very helpful suggestions..... :)
