Altland Smoothrifle finished
« on: April 14, 2019, 01:39:47 AM »
The 20 ga/62 cal octagon to round barrel was made to the dimensions of an original barrel on an Altland smoothrifle by Charles Burton of FCI. Lock was cut from a Chambers Gunmakers Flintlock to the shape of an original Altland lock. The stock dimensions are also from an original Altland rifle.  (Thanks Stan Hollenbaugh!) The carving, patchbox, sideplate, and engraving were taken from an original in the Kindig collection. The stock was first treated with vinegaroon and the a wash of LMF maple and BC Colonial Red to get a red cast. Patchbox, thimbles, nosecap, sights, and trigger by myself.

Hi Barry,
Wonderful.  I love the Atland guns because of their similarity to George Eister's work.  You did really well reproducing that style.  Well done.

Smart Dog,  That means a great deal to me!  Thanks.  And an Eister is up next.

That is some pretty work.  I especially like your decisions on barrel finishing and butt carving.  God Bless,  Marc

Marc and Rich,  Thanks for your kind remarks.  Marc, I saw the original rifle and really liked its looks.  I tried to approximate it's look.

Beautiful work Barry.  Crisp lines & carving.  I really like the finish and also the barrel finish as well.  Could you share the finish you used for the barrel?  Thanks.  TommyG

TommyG.  Thanks for the comments.  I used LMF cold browning solution.  I rusted it several times and rubbed it back initially with steel wool until it pitted a bit. The last coats were rubbed back with automotive Scotchbrite.  I was trying to get the uneven look that I saw on the original rifle.

Very nice work,  I like to see faithful reproductions of originals.  It is always nice to have the original available for a "bench copy" when possible.  You quickly discover when working from photos that many of the books do not show many of the views that you need.   Your fine work and attention to detail certainly shows...

Thank you Ron.  While I didn't have a rifle at my disposal for a bench copy, handling , photographing,  and measuring an original, as well as seeing the rifle  I took the many of features from were  instrumental in getting the feel and views needed to get close to the original work.  I was fortunate in a way many others are not.  Thanks for your comments!

Great gun, Barry. I especially like the rear sight, too.
Do you have a bead on the front sight blade?

Daryl,  Thanks!  I just made a flattop front sight a bit wider than usual.  The old eyes need a bit of help.

What a beautiful gun, I like everything about it. The fit and finish are impeccable. With that barrel it should handle very well. Fantastic job!

TKs Barry. Yes - I had to go to a wide V and large bead on my .50, yet it does not look large when peering through the sights.

Very nice. The job you did on the barrel wedges, one of the best I've seen.

Thank you Alacran.  They are not 100% perfect but the jig I got from one of our members, Dave Rase, contributed greatly to my success on that.

I like it a lot. Nice job on that turkey, too.
