Figure in Cherry....
« on: April 17, 2019, 06:07:08 PM »
Just finished my first Kibler Colonial.  I cut this cherry tree on my own property just about four years ago.  When Jim Kibler offered his great kit allowing for our own wood I jumped on it.  I had no idea of the figure, just that I want to build three guns from it.  One for each of my Sons.
What surprises me is the figure in this tree.  Frankly, I have not seen this kind of look in cherry, though I am very inexperienced.
Please disregard the amature carving, but is this figure neat, or what?!
Jim Chambers oil finish didn't hurt either.

Beautiful wood, that rifle looks great. I've saw that Dunlap's offers figured Cherry stock blanks for an upgrade but harvesting your own makes for a much better story. I think the carving looks good, too. The wood looks so good that the less complex carving fits it well, at least in my opinion.

Wow!  I remember that stock and even after shaping didn't realize it had that nice of figure.  Neat that it came from your land.    Great job of assembly, carving and finishing!

Looks great! Would one term that figure as ‘flame’ in cherry?

Thanks guys, yer making my cry. I hope it will mean something to my boys, coming from this property.
You may not belive it, but the stain is a military gun stock stain called, Walnut with a hint of red.  It is a little too red for me, but looks better in normal lite.
Maybe some remember, but I asked about using a pc of Logan's Elm.  I kept it simple.

Bigmon,

That is some beautiful figure.  The cherry I've seen, if it has any figure at all will just be lighter and darker kind of mottled areas, but not real defined like yours.  And, it came from your place.  Very cool.

That looks great. It looks like marble or something.

What can anyone say?  It's VERY special in the least. Love it.
Really like that wood and colour.

Does cherry wood smell like the fruit?

When burning -  as in a Big Green Egg BQ.
Same with apple, hickory, mesquite, alder, etc.
