Outstanding job.  That is a really stricking rifle.  I had a chance to handle it at Friendship and it is as sleek and slim in person as it looks in the pics.  The tang is wonderful.  Nice job on the triggers too.

Thanks guys.    :)

It didn't come out as I originally intended, as it has more of a reddish hue to it than I wanted, but all in all it came out pretty much to my liking.  I didn't let the metal age as long as I should have so it was intended to be darker, so I may rework that part.   Got in a hurry to get it done ........ duh......... ::)

And Ken Guy..........  Thank you for your input on it & especially on the lock modifications.   ;)

The buttplate is a H&H buttplate & I touched it up a bit with files & a graver..

Stain is Danglers reddish brown, rubbed out & then 4-5 coats of Danglers dark brown., then rubbed out.

Finish is Tru-Oil, about 12-15 very light hand rubbed coats. About the first 5 with 600 paper rub in between, then the later ones with 1000 paper, the last one with 2000 paper rub. Then stock rubbed out with Mothers Mag Wheel polish to take the shine Tru-Oil off & then furniture wax.

Birddog 6, I must say your handi-craft is very neat and the triggers do look great.  What will your next project be?  Cheers, Bookie

I was talking with Keith and Ken when they let it slip that Keith had a rifle in Gun Makers Hall.  It's even prettier in person.  Vey Nice rifle.

Bookie.

Right now I am working on a big bore Lancaster for a customer.  After that it will be a super curly Ash Tenn. rifle for myself, or a 46" barrel  Walnut Tenn. rifle, have not decided which one to do next.  And I have a youth Lancaster I am about to carve as well.

Thanks

Keith

Boy, there certainly is a New Southern Mountain Contemporary School with you, Ken, Ian Pratt,  Bookie and a few others.  That breech you welded for ken is really neat as well.  I expect we'll be seeing it soon.  What superb work.  these gunns are really nicer than the originals.

Thanks all, I really do appreciate it........

Well........  I was never a real Tenn. fan myself, I mean I liked them but only built a few & mostly build other style rifles.  Once I was at the CLA show, man, that was truly an inspiration & opened a whole new world to me of Southern & Tennessee  rifles.....   :o

Many thanks to  Ian Pratt, Steve Bookout, Ken Guy, Dennis Glazener, & the many others that have show me some amazing Tennessee & Southern rifle work, and also Thank You ...to the guys that brought all of those magnificent rifles to the CLA show last year..  It was truly a wonderful show...... ;)

A job well done to say the least. It is amazing how many methods there are to stain and finish a rifle. Your is certainly eye pleasing and worth writing down. Thanks for sharing your pictures.

I half pestered Keith to get this gun done so he could show it to me a Friendship. I think he burned some midnight oil to get it done too. You should see it in person. The pictures look good, but in your hands, it is even better.

Keith,
That's a great looking rifle.  You stated that it's a tad bit too red in color for your liking but I like it...alot!  I hope you bring it with you if you're making the trip to Dixon's next month.  I'd love to look at it in detail.  Again, great job.

Keith,
I too love the color, about the amount of red that I like in a stock. I will have to try a bottle of Dangler's reddish brown. Have used LMF Nut Brown and its not quite enough.

Nice job on the rifle.

Dennis:  Thank you...  When I first put that red on there I said  "Oh Boy.............."  as it was WAY too red from what I wanted.  Man I took it outside & dumped a whole bottle of rubbing alcohol into a plastic bucket & started washing  the stock out with 0000 steel wool & alcohol....  I thought I would never get it toned down........  Then I think there is 4 super heavy coats of Danglers Dark Brown on it & I mean it was brown/black with stain.... Then started washing it out just to where the stripes started coming out.  Let it dry. Then whiskered it down good & started the finish & or course every time I rubbed it down with the 600 paper, the stripes came out just a lil more......
I actually wanted to have a orange/reddish base but I had never done it & it was one of the finest pieces of maple I have ever had, and I was afraid I would screw it up.  I am going to try one with a orange/red or orange/yellow base some time, but not on a piece of week like that to test on !  ha ha !   ;D
