Iron mounted / Not Southern
« on: April 25, 2019, 09:12:19 PM »
Where might one find some iron furniture for a Lancaster or York ? If it has to be cast then so be it, would prefer forged. Making gun for nephew and he wants iron . While we are on the topic was iron not used in the York , Lancaster , Reading area in the late 1700's early 1800's, aside from Southern Mt. rifles? Don't remember seeing any originals (full stock) iron mounted. I know Ian goes iron but I am sure they are all made to order for each gun.         Steve

Iron was “never” used to mount Pennsylvania early or Golden Age rifles. Yet many suppliers like Track of the Wolf sell cast steel furniture that is modeled after original brass furniture.

I have the John Bivins Lancaster iron T-gard and buttplate castings that I can sell you for $50 shipped.  Track of the Wolf has the rest of the parts.  Just do a search on Bivins.

Do some googling and also search on this site for the Thomas Tileston rifle.  It's dated 1773, and I don't think the barrel is a restock.  It is very likely of New England (probably MA) manufacture and there's an unsigned fowler in Grinslade's fowler book very likely by the same guy.  Beautiful iron mounts.  May be a one-of, but it exists nevertheless.  Even without the 1773 date, it could still easily warrant a 1770s through 1780s date given the styling.

There is an iron mounted Lancaster in the Kindig book. I can't tell you the # but up towards the front
after the wood box section.

It’s hard to know what to say about that rifle. I’ll limit it to “I don’t think a trained Lancaster gunsmith crafted that one.”

IMHO the "iron" hardware modeled after brass antiques is a lot better looking.
I have never liked brass hardware on a gun of any kind and while I am NOT
a gunMAKER I am glad to see an alternative available at whatever cost.
