Here's the early rifle I've been working on. Kibler's stain and Pilkington classic oil with black pigment added. The steel parts have been treated with Dangler's browning solution boiled and rubbed back.

Very nice. I love that style of lock. You did an excellent build. This is the exact thing i picture when i think of an early rifle. Minimal carving and an elegance all its own.

Very nice rifle. Generally I don't care for pre patinated guns, but that is just an opinion. I really like the wood to metal fit that you present.
The simple elegance of the gun really makes it quite appealing.

Mr. Barker: you nailed the stain!! That is the colour of most original longrifles I have examined, in person, on the internet, and in books. I presume it is Ferric Nitrate, because that is the colour it yields.

I like it simple yet sharp, nice. Could you explain the iron( barrel,lock) finish technique. Browning solution rubbed back after each application? You mention boiled

Great rifle, looks like more but that's the clean lines, love that Square ended box. How is the release set up on it?

Mike my wife says I hunt and trap way too much and work way too little.

I put on several coats of browning solution without carding between coats and let the parts sit outside for several days. When I think its done I have a gutter that I fill with water and get it hot enough that you don't want to leave your hand in it. It's not boiling hot. Put the parts in it and let them set until they turn black. Then I pull them out and use a green 3-M pad soaked with W-D40 and scrub the parts until I get the look I want.

Scott the barrel is Rice and I think its the early Haga profile. It's the one that is 40-15/16" long.

Tim the box has a regular wood box spring that catches on the wood. I've seen an original or two that is set up like this instead of using the butt plate as a catch.

Taylor the stain is Kiblers and I'm pretty sure he uses ferric nitrate.

I can tell you, because I own this piece, that it is a dream to handle. It has great balance and actually is pretty light. Very fortunate to once again own flintlocks!

That is breathtakingly lovely. I'd never get anything done if it was hanging on my wall. I'd stare at it until I remembered to go shooting.

She's a sweetheart all the way around. I didn't think I'd like the patchbox, but once done, it looks just right on there. Bet someone is happy shooting that one right now. God Bless, Marc
