Finished Kibler Southern Mountain Rifle
« on: May 02, 2019, 05:34:46 PM »
Finished this awesome gun up a couple months ago but just getting to put some pictures on now. I bought the kit on consignment at Dixon’s. It’s a .40 cal walnut stocked rifle. It was my first time building a rifle and while it’s not fancy I’m very happy with the turnout. The rifle is a really sweet shooter. The quality of the kit and the smoothness of assembly was amazing for my first build as well. I used super blue on metal parts then a scotch brite pad to bring it back to a dull gray. On the wood I used laurel mtn forge walnut stain and two coats of Chamber’s oil finish to seal it. Had such a great ti me putting this together ordered another kit, this time a colonial .50 cal, with a curly ash blank I sent in. Also, for my dad’s birthday I got him a colonial in .58 smooth cherry stocked that will be on the way hopefully soon as well! In one pic it is with my Ken Netting cherry Fowler which is also an amazing gun that I was lucky to get my hands on. Also, in the bright sunlight the stock has hues or red but only really in the sun.

Thank you! I definitely get to take it out often. It’s my main hiking partner here in the mountains of PA! haha

What a slender beauty it is, too.  My dream is a Kibler SMR kit in .45.

I would love a .45 as well in the same style. .45 is the minimum for flintlock deer season here in PA. The .40 was just there ready to be built at Dixon’s so I couldn’t pass up on it. Southern mtn rifles are my favorite style of rifle I think. Carrying this one in the woods is awesome as well. Like you said it’s so slender and it feels more like a walking stick in the hand than a rifle!

You did an awesome job on that rifle. May I ask what finish you used
On the lock and other metal parts. It looks sweet to say the least.

Thank you! I used Birchwood Casey super blue and then a red scotchbrite pad to bring the metal back slightly to a dull gray color. It was really simple and you can adjust the finish however you’d like with how much effort you put into scratching the finish back.

Well done, shes a beauty. I just started looking at Jim's videos on YouTube on the SM rifle kit. Trying to decide if I should give it a go or just look for a SMR that strikes my fancy.

I had a great time building the rifle and felt accomplished when it was done and I had put it together. I suggest just go ahead and order the kit and build it. It was very fun and worth the time!
