Is the bore in good condition, and already smooth? What are you trying to correct?

Yes - what is YOUR purpose? Is it pitted and/or have boring marks?

I would drill, ream and then use an expandable barrel lap the smooth and polish it.

I have seen everything used for lapping from Colgate tooth paste to coarse valve
grinding compound used in valve repairs on car engines.

If the reaming is done correctly, there is no need to lap or polish a smooth bore. If it is to be used for round ball, it will be best to not polish or lap unless there is a problem as making the surface too smooth creates problems. If the bore is to be used with unprotected bird shot pellets, polishing should not be done on the 3cm closest to muzzle.

This is confusing.  Have you already purchased a new barrel or are you making your own barrel from a piece of round stock?
If you purchased a new barrel, then none of this applies, as it has already been done.
If you are making your own barrel, then it all applies.

Which is it?

I would try 220 grit to start then go to 320 and 600 depending on how it looks.
If a hand turned square bit is used then lapping may not be needed.
