old rifle
« on: May 21, 2019, 09:29:58 PM »
A friend has an original half stock. Looks like 36 cal. Brass mounts, cap lock.
The stock is cracked at the wrist, which can be fixed. The bore needs work and maybe the lock.
I may buy it . What does it take to clean up the bore?
Looks like a Goushler lock. Will get picks tomorrow.

It’s rare to find a small caliber halfstock with half decent rifling. I’ve been freshing barrels and many have pits 0.020” deep. Getting Bobby Hoyt to drill, ream, and re-rifle is most cost efficient. I could advise you on re -cutting the rifling or do it for a price IF the rifling is not awful and extends all the way to the breechplug. If the powder chamber has no strong rifling left then freshing should only be done by a zealous owner because you’re looking at 16 hours of work.

By your description I'd not give more than a couple hundred bucks for it.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Probably a wise decision.
