More Brooks Castings on guns.
« on: May 28, 2019, 11:37:43 PM »
I’m certainly no professional but I do enjoy shop time. Being retired gives me the chance to dabble in gun work during the warmer months. It’s 87 degrees here along Stoner Creek today. Anyway I just put this project together using some more of Mike Brooks brass castings. This gun falls directly into what my friend David Rase correctly calls “Generic Longrifles”. Mike’s castings are second only to Reaves Gohering’s stuff. No flaws, no voids, easy to bend, file, and finish. They are a dream to work with. You’re going to have to ask him which guard this is.
The rest of the gun parts came from Harrison Gunstocks, Jim Chambers, RE Davis, and Green Mountain. Kiblers Iron Nitrate stain overcoated with LMF maple and Lancaster maple.

That’s a nice one. Beautiful piece of wood.  Looks like a Lancaster style to my inexperienced eyes.

Outstanding looking rifle Wayne.  When Brooks and I come down to Stoner Creek in August, we may have to have sip a bit of Woodford Reserve and discuss uping your gunbuilding status to the next level.  Of course we will first need to establish what level you currently are operating at.  Hard to beat retirement.

shoot, perhaps I will bring a jug or two of Woodford's if that is the admission price.  Come to think of it, I have an unopened one that I need to check on.

Wayne has been teaching me the finer points of consuming bourbon my last couple of trips to Stoner Creek.  I am still an apprentice assistant 2nd class when it comes to bourbon. ???

Nice work, Wayne.  And Brooks seems to be starting a casting business.  He appears to do really high quality work.  Maybe I'll find some good Hawken castings there in Iowa.

Really like the finish on that rifle.
