His shop in the woods of Adams county was selected for its geomagnetic properties and he always tempers with a magnetic north orientation.

It's all true. Last week I wasn't paying attention and accidentally quenched a long blade oriented true north instead of magnetic. The blade immediately warped into a corkscrew and the tip punched a hole through my quench tank. Beginners take note - take the time to learn about magnetic declination or your knives are going to suck
