Bag #13 - Mid 1700's style
« on: June 28, 2019, 03:16:44 PM »
Hi Folks,

Here is my latest, a version of the one I did for the CLA auction this year.  This is for our immensely patient member Dennis who saw that bag and wanted something similar. I started this project in the winter and regrettably immediately ran into the awful hide issues with the Tandy leather I bought.  I put the project on hold for a while, searched out leather, and got my confidence back.  Never again will I buy leather from Tandy.

All of that said, this later version went fairly smoothly.  This bag style is neat (from a mid-1700s steel engraving), but a touch complicated for a novice like me.  2-3 cowhide ounce for the bag itself.  4-5 ounce straps.  The attachment straps are anchored deep onto the back panel for long-term strength and bag stability.  There is also a five-ounce heavy leather stiffener inside the top edge.  The welt is goatskin.  It has an internal pocket, and a suede cowhide rolled edge on the front panel.

I hope y'all enjoy it.  CLA is coming soon, and I can't wait to see everyone again and visit.  God Bless,   Marc

Marc, that’s another beauty!  The  tooling on the flap, and the other little details really make it special.

The bag will be used with this German mid-19th century cape gun.  The capper and powder flask are Austrian accessories of the same period and the shot flask is a shot charger that I salvaged and made a leather body for.  What fun. Thanks, Marc.

Thank you so much for the photo Dennis.  I always enjoy seeing the bags in use.  Please post a field photo of your gun and gear when you get out.

Your photo is much superior to mine, especially the color of the bag.  I tried indoors and out, sun and shade, and non came out the color of the bag.  In your shot it looks just like it did in person.

That is one fine looking double in the photo sir.  And I like your work on that shot charger.  Very well crafted.

God Bless,  Marc

Marc,
Here is a pic of your bag on its first hunt, it worked quite nicely.  The size was just right for the shot and powder flasks, the capper and the wad box.

Thanks again for a great bag.
Dennis

Thanks to everyone for the feedback.  The birds are spruce grouse, superb table fare.  This was the gun's first outing also and feels like good karma for both it and the bag.
