Has anyone tried 1fg in their smoothbore for shot? If so, would l be interested in results. Thanks. Jerry

I used Swiss 1.5 once and it caused me all sorts of problems in a 24 ga. that never had any problems. Hammer falls, hang fires, and heavy dry fouling, but I was shooting a woodswalk with round ball. Another shooter loaned me some 4f to prime and still had problems. It finally stuck a ball which the range officer couldn't blow out and 4 guys with a range rod and ball screw couldn't pull. I finally had to take it home and soak both ends of the breech with water for two days before I could pull it.

1fg is all I use in my 12 ga. Its improved every load I use be it squirrel or turkey loads. Also does well with my patched ball load. I highly recommend its use in big bore (12 10 or 16 ) ga smoothbores. I have never tried it in a 20 so I cant comment there. Just get some an try it an you will be pleased

I have been using it in my shotguns to get rid of it. Might be one of the reasons that I have been getting some lack of firing issues. Had not thought about that for part of the reason.

If recoil is a concern 1f will accelerate the shot/ball more gradually and beat up the shooter less. In big bores the difference is significant.

On a recommendation from an old timer, I tried it. 1Fg improved my groups and # of shots without cleaning in my 'bigger' fowlers, e.g, a:

* 62-cal w/ 48" barrel

* 66-cal w/ 54" barrel

* 75-cal w/ 60" barrel (weighs in at ~8 pounds)

At a woodswalk in JAN I just couldn't miss w/ the Dutch club butt 75, shots out to 80-yards, coming in 2nd behind the top rifle shooter. Every wanted to shoot it and we easily put > 40 down range and the last paper cartridge loaded easily!

Not sure I'd use it in a 42" or 44" 62-cal fowler; LONG barrels and/or larger bores only.

I know its not the same but since TOF mentioned 1&1/2 Swiss I will respond , I use 1&1/2 Swiss in my 62 rifle with 31 inch barrel with no problems so far. One day at the AZWINS shoot last March in dry Arizona I sen t over 40 rounds down range with no more fouling than I would have had any other place I have shot that gun/load combo. Maybe patch lube is the problem for those that have a problem with the 1 and 1&1/2 granulations. Just a thought.

I prefer to use 1F in 58 caliber and larger with ball and shot. No fire or fouling problems using Schuetzen or Swiss.

I have used it in my punt gun [ 4 bore ] and in my 10 bore . The punt gun is for fun , but the 10 bore is my main hunting gun, and I'm happier with the results I get with FFg [ paper cartridges with round balls] It's worth a try if you're not happy with the results you're getting now, otherwise, why complicate things ?

I did some of my best tradegun shooting using 1F Goex. When I ran out, I shot 2F, but got more blown patterns, and fewer hits with a round ball. Then somebody gave me some 2FA blasting powder for my cannon, and I tried it in my trade gun, and once again the slower burning powder improved my shooting, especially shooting shot.

I use 1F in my 10 bore. I get 100% reliable ignition with an 0.0820" (#45) flash hole.

Do you consider 20 gauge a big bore?

It works just fine in 12 bores as well as in my .69 (14 bore rifle) Like when switching from 3F to 2F, when switching from 2F to 1F - you have to add more powder to get the same ballistics and normally, accuracy as well.
1f GOEX also works great (shoots identically for accuracy with 2F) in my buffalo rifle, a .45 cal. with heavy bullets.

I have never used anything but 1F in my 12ga fowler, very nice patterns and good round ball groups.

I do have a jug choke but it took a Skychief load to get a good pattern out of it at 25 yards, 90 gr of 1F and 1 1/2 oz of #6 shot.

My only smoothbore is a Bess, so it has very limited use with birdshot, maybe 5 or 10 shots. But with .715 round ball, I use 90 grains FFg or 100 grains Fg, both Goex. I prefer 100 grains of Fg, as the recoil impulse is noticeably lower. I have yet to find a powder horn which dispenses those big Fg granules very well, but I admit I haven't looked or experimented too much.

I’m in the same boat. 11 lbs of 1f and nothing over a .58. I plan on building a 16g Fowler this winter just to make space in my powder magazine.

1F works fine in a twenty gauge, and I have no doubt it will work fine in a twenty four gauge as well. It doesn’t blow the pattern nearly as often as all the hotter powders.

Taylor shot a match with his .40, Kuntz flinter, using 1F. He'd grabbed the wrong horn at rendezvous. It worked quite fine, although he needed to up his powder charge considerably to
make it shoot to the sights. Fortunately for us, it took him some time to realize that, which gave us a 'fighting' chance to beat him. I do not (quite) remember the results of that match, however.

So - will it work in a .54 or .58 smoothie? It "worked" in a .40 calibre flintlock rifle, does that answer the question?

If the cost of powder offends you, do not use a powder that demands an increase in charge weight, in your .32 or .36.
Both 2F and 1F require more powder be used to shoot to the sights set for faster, 3F powder. If you are only shooting
to 25 yards, testing will be needed still, but the difference might be negligible.

Whatever powder costs, it will not be cheaper next year. When I need powder, I scrounge the money to buy as much as I can afford (rationalize). I've never seen anyone with too much powder. 'Cept maybe Guy Fox!
