ALR Rules have changed

Please take note that our rules have changed. To view these changes please review items 1 through 4 at this URL: http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=42270.msg411606#msg411606

The Admins and Moderators have made changes that now allow American and related SIDE LOCK muzzle loading long range bullet guns. We also removed the cut off date on original guns. The restriction that a gun must be a side lock and a muzzle loader makes the date range un-necessary.

We still exclude mass produced Civil War guns, there are many other forums that are open to these type guns.

Good news indeed.  This is the best site on the internet, with some great people on it.

I am so glad we can talk about bear pistols again.  Seriously, I would like to own a bear pistol!  Sorry, being in Iowa with Mike is rubbing off on me. :P

Yes indeed. Now it's a forum for my two favorite muzzle loaders,the Tn.Long Rifle
and the English inspired long range match rifle.

I think all the moderators should be commended for a measured and thoughtful review of the issue. While I am pleased with the outcome, even if the decision had been different I would still commend the moderators for how they approached the issue. On most other sites there would have been a rapid breakdown in civility that would have spiraled into name calling etc. it was impressive to see differing opinions weighed, commented on objectively and a decision made.

If a trip around the world could be had for a dollar I couldn't afford to
get out of sight ;D.
The extension of the time frame is a big help because some of these
long range rifles were still being made into the 1890's because the
loads could be instantly adjusted at the range and the brass case
guns were stuck with whatever they were loaded with by Kynoch
or whoever.
I went to a local range for a 500 meter shoot on knock down targets
and when I told them I had a muzzle loader they thought the targets
would have to be set closer than they liked.I proved to them that the
breech loader has an advantage in loading faster but beat all of them at
500 meters.Lots of fun!

This rule change allows discussion of most of the late 19th century heavy target rifles - which probably were the most accurate muzzleloading rifles ever made in America, maybe the world.  A very good thing.  I say most, because Billinghurst style rifles would still be out of bounds.

Sidelock = Standard percussion or flintlock mounted on the side of the barrel.

I was just curious why box-locks are not allowed. Many flintlocks were made that way.

It was a good place to draw a line. We felt our longrifle forum was being stretched too far. Side locks only gave us a good clean division line from other types of muzzle loaders.
