Mike Brooks Gunmakers Classes
« on: July 25, 2019, 05:01:52 PM »
Mike posted some time ago offering gunmakers classes for $150.00 per day.
Well, I’ve been a hobby gun stocker for around 35 years rarely if ever going beyond poor boy, plain Jane, or generic. I spent most of my time at work, restoring our old house, or helping with the kids. I’m now a retired guy with the same interest in this gun work but with a desire to improve.
I contacted Mike and told him what I wanted to learn (relief carving and basic engraving). I made the trip to Iowa last week and brought along a rifle that I had ready to carve. This gun was based on RCA #29 with some ingredients from other guns from the Reading area which appear to have the same origin.
Mike’s teaching method is simple. “Show me what you want and I’ll show you how I do it”. There was no monologue, no prepared agenda, no chalkboard. By the end of the afternoon I was comfortable with the parting tool and chisels. The same result on day 2 and engraving.  We spent a lot of time talking about the gravers and sharpening.
$300.00 for a 2 day gunmakers class with a real professional one on one is a heck of a deal folks!

That is very impressive work for a 'student' my friend.  This kind of education is invaluable:  it raises the value of your work, and increases the satisfaction level X 10!!

Tom an what's wrong with the table ?  I patterned mine after Herchels. It didn't help my skill level. But it sure matches one of the Masters.
  Thats a start right...!!!
$150 a day. That indeed is a great deal. I like the fact that it's laid back style. But you sure did learn...!! Well done Wayne cause I couldn't care a turkey right now...!!

For a hundred and fifty bucks a day I hope you get a diploma upon completion?  A framed sheepskin from the Mike Brooks Institute of Higher Learning would sure look good adorning a shop wall, plus it would sure impress your friends.

Looks like you got a lot out of the carving day.  That’s some nice clean work with a parting tool.

I'll bet that's true. And, you cannot put a price on friendship.

I think some of us would pay more than that just to get to the basic architecture down, as you have Wayne. Then learning to put the icing on the cake comes in, that takes confidence and an instructor that not only knows what he is doing but is not afraid to share. May sound corny but it's true. How many times would you have had to try what you've done to get it right by yourself...No answer is needed.

I think Wayne has always been capable of doing this kind of work, he just needed a push off the edge of the cliff. The first step is always the biggest one.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

When publications do ratings of things like this, imagine this ‘Day With Mike’ (DWM) would likely be both the ‘best buy’ and the ‘editor’s choice’.

Only question, who pays for lunch?  Or is it included? Would hope for a ‘working lunch’, either way. A lot to learn....

I bought lunch but it wasn’t necessary. Got to take a ride into town in Mike’s old F-3. A nice nostalgic experience. I’ll be back next year.

Wayne looks like you did a really nice job on the carving. You must have had a little know how to pick it up that quick, or Mike has magic dust to sprinkle on students.
