Just finishing up an English rifle/shot gun project
« on: July 26, 2019, 05:33:38 AM »
I have been working on this project for years. I ordered the custom barrels for it from Ed Rayl back in 2006. I know the custom barrel profiles are a pain in the neck for these guys and he came through with a great set for me. Several of the tasks of this project were new to me and issues came up and were solved each in turn. I am grateful for the coming together of the fates for getting this to this final stage. I wanted to share with you guys the final results. This is a .62 cal rifle stocked with English Walnut, with a swap out oct-rnd 36" 20 ga. shotgun barrel. I used the Davis late flintlock and the single set Hawken trigger from TOW. It was going to be a plain gun but I found that I couldn't let it not have some touches of engraving here and there. This stems from the fact that the trigger guard, having some cast in engraving that I couldn't file out due to its depth. So I thought, what the heck and chased it out with hammer and chisel. Well if you did some there, then this bit leaded to that bit and the next thing you know the butt plate tang needed some bling as well as the standing breach not to be left out.

Well done Dave!!  I really like it!  Your added engraving gave this piece that pure English elegance (my little pinky raised as I drink my tea)  ;D

Thank you for your kind words guys. Taylor, Yes I agree that some flat top chequering would add a final touch to the project. I am looking forward to a trip to the range this weekend to see how it groups. I have some round balls around here some where. I have not done much with working up a proper shotgun load before.  I am sure that a quick scan through the shooting section here will put me on the right track. I know this will be used for turkey's in eastern Oregon. My next shotgun project will be an English fowler with an Ed Rayl 42" Oct-Rnd 12 bore that he turned out real thin at the business end. The turkeys in our area have exploded and we all must do our part to save the sage grouse. ::)

Beautiful gun. I like the engraving on trigger grand and the pistol grip Stock. Some checkering on the grip would really high ligth it.

Best regards

Very nice indeed. Yes - it, like my 14 bore, needs checkering. I have been toying with the idea of sending my
20 smooth-bore barrel to someone to have an identical one (or swamped octagonal) made in .54 or .58cal. rifled,
to fit on the same stock.
Excellent idea Dave.
