William Kellar "boys" Rifle completed
« on: August 03, 2019, 03:03:07 AM »
Completed the grandsons William Kellar rifle except for a couple more coats of oil  and a bit of distressing fine tuning.  Feels good to get this one in the done pile.  Some specifications: 36 caliber 3/4" to 5/8" tapered 25 3/8" long barrel.  Walnut stock.  Forged steel mounts.  Extensive wriggle engraving throughout.  Becky's lock internals and hammer that I made a new lock plate for. Modified set of old Hedgecock triggers.  The metal was rust browned for a good week straight, no carding until it builds up pits then filed/sanded back.  Steel open nose cap with a poured pewter insert to lock it to the forestock.

I had a small pistol grip or long range style underway for our grandson
here in Huntington and it was stolen 10 years ago when my shop was broken into.
It would have been a mini Creedmoor complete with tang sight in 40 caliber.
This is a nice full stock and a fortunate young man will have something to keep
after HE is a grandfather.

Here is the start on the accouterments for the little guy.  Mills bag, Keller tow worm set, Seabolt knife, Barker measure and Cline belt axe.  I suppose I have to get started on grandson #2's set.  Going to build him a 3/4 scale 1/2 stock Hawken.  .40 caliber tapered barrel.  He is only 4 1/2 months old so I have a couple of years.

You really captured the look on this one David!  It has the aura of an original.  Awesome job with the wriggle engraving, to me that is a hard one to master and make it look right.  Lucky grandson!
