GRRW 8 vs 7 barrel groove value?
« on: August 03, 2019, 08:31:40 PM »
Just picked up a GRRW Hawken and it has an 8 groove barrel.  I believe these were Douglass.  Is the relative value of a Green River the same with either barrel?  I can see were folks might prefer the 7 groove GRRW made barrels. Thanks.

Some people might put a small premium on a GRRW rifle with a GRRW barrel versus a Douglas barrel, but it is the pattern or style of Hawken that has a bigger influence.

The GRRW Hawken evolved over the years that the company was in operation.  The earliest ones were kind of experimental patterns where they tried different component parts and stock profiles.  They finally standardized on a stock pattern and set of component parts around the mid-30's serial number.  The rifles in this "standard" pattern were pretty much the same except when they started making them with their own barrels in 1974 (around SN H-118).  GRRW started going through a transition pattern again in 1975 with some different component parts, particularly the lock.  This continued into 1976 when Cherry Corners sold out to Ithaca Gun Co and they had to use different breech & tang.

Pretty much from the first Hawken rifle produced in 1973 to late 1976, nearly all GRRW Hawken rifles were built with 1" barrels.  There were a few made with 1⅛" barrels, but not many.

When GRRW contracted with the Montana Historical Society to make copies of the original Jim Bridger Hawken rifle, they were allowed to borrow the original Hawken and study it in their shop.  This caused a rethink on what a Hawken rifle should look and feel like.  In late 1976, they started emphasizing a new pattern for the Hawken based on the Bridger rifle with a heavier 1⅛" barrel.  Nearly all the Hawken rifles they built after 1976 had an 1⅛" barrel.  These are the most in-demand GRRW Hawken rifles today.

I've been following sales of GRRW guns on Gunbroker for a number of years, and in the past two, the late "Bridger" pattern Hawken with the 1⅛" barrel has been bringing premium prices from $2,500 to $3,000.  One with two interchangeable barrels sold for just under $5,000.

The earlier patterns with 1" barrels have been selling anywhere from $1,000 to $1,900, depending on condition and other factors.  One of these factors may be the barrel manufacture, but it doesn't seem to be too strong a factor.

How about posting some pictures of your GRRW Hawken?
