Bump inside barrel
«
on:
August 11, 2019, 02:33:24 AM »
Acquired a 54 swamped barrel with a bump in the bore from a bumped up barrel tennion
It's in the center about 27 inches from breech .
I know answer is to discard it but has anyone removed this bump with lead laps ore any other method
Thought I would ask before making it a tomato stake.
Thanks

Hi,
No, the answer is that it may be lapped down if not too severe. That is worth a try before discarding it. I did exactly that on a barrel of a gun given me to fix. It is now the owners prize barrel for target shooting.

I’m with Dave. Often what feels like a bump is pretty small. Maybe 0.001-2”. I would keep rotating the lap one groove each time. Otherwise the lap may just adjust in that one groove or land.

How much "Bump" are we concerned about here? Lapping doesn't remove alot of material.

So, it’s a very short tapered barrel now. Take a look at Tommy G’s short Moravian rifle.

Thanks Rich. I got a chance to shoot that guy last week. Was curious about the 26" barrel accuracy. No problems there. The target on the left was the first 8 shots at 25 yds., on the right was my group at 50 yds. . bear in mind I was just working up a load for the gun and it will be sighted by my son. I wouldn't hesitate to build another with a 26, 27 or 28" barrel. Here is the link to the short barrel Moravian gun I recently built.

Maybe I should have spoke up before you got the hacksaw out.....You could have sent it to Hoyt and had a liner put in it.
