Finished “ Fox Faced” Double Bag
« on: August 12, 2019, 12:51:53 AM »
I finally finished the Fox faced bag. Its 7” x 7 1/2”.   It’s not perfect but it’s by far my best yet.  I dyed it with my airbrush, used some antiquing paste and used embossing tools for the first time. The leather is soft on the hand and it’s roomy.  Thanks everyone for the tips and advice.  James and Marc were instrumental in completing this pouch.

Very nice work. I know you are pleased. I think you did a fantastic  job on this. I have always thought this bag was Art Deco and fits well with the beginnings of the muzzleloading revival period of Roberts, Farris, etc.

Thanks for the compliments.  Feel free to throw some advice my way.  I’m copying other people’s work. Those that are able to keep the historical architecture and somehow have their own personal touch added are the real artists in my book.  Members of this site are the best in the business.  Learning is kind of like osmosis.

Wayne,  I want to learn to blacksmith.  I have a project that I’ll get with you on. I have a beautiful forged trigger guard from a member  but it needs to be a bit smaller to fit my plans.  Ill see you Thursday.

James,.

The design of this bag may be earlier than you think.  Don Getz brought an antique bag to the CLA ALR meeting a number of years ago.  I believe the bag had been handed down thru his family.  I think the Getz bag is the inspiration for the recent "fox faced" bags.  Don posted pictures of it on ALR but it may be on the old board.  I'll try to find it.

The older I get, the faster time goes by.....  It was in 2007 that Don brought the fox faced bag to the CLA ALR meeting.  He said it was made by his grandfather Isaac Getz.  Here's a picture I took of it.

Don had Steve Lallioff make 4 copies of the bag.  Don kept one, Steve kept one, one went with the rifle that was auctioned at the 2008 CLA show, and I never did hear where the 4th one went.

BTW Mike,
Great job on the bag!

I never could find a picture of how the flap was sewed on.  This picture from ALR just makes it more mysterious.   It might be all one piece in the back,  I’m not sure.  There’s about 5 or 6 pictures I found online to reference but none showed how the flap was installed.

Very, very, well done. I love the color variation and detail, artistic yet wonderfully functional. That is some work to be proud of.

You have to be so pleased with how that came out. Just wonderful, especially with the whimsy of the fox face. The finish looks sure. Please bring it to CLA. As was said above, you are good at anything you set your mind to. Bravo. God bless, Marc

Thanks everyone.  I’ll bring it with me Thursday and Friday Marc.  I’m going to keep this one as my personal bag.   I have 6 others that I’m going to part with to make room for more.  These things start adding up over time and my wife is complaining about them hanging everywhere.  I figure when she sees one turn into cash,  her tone will change.

Mike, great job on the bag!  I can't believe it's been twelve years since Don had the bag at the CLA show.
