Stock cross section behind breech
« on: August 17, 2019, 11:47:39 PM »
Please see the attached photos.  Should the stockmatch the flats of the barrel
More than what's shown? Thanks

Hi,
You need to remove wood and expose at least half of the barrel, then have a rounded step up to the breech and tang.  The wood should be shaped flush with the barrel flats, however, on trade guns they sometimes left a step up from the barrel because it required less time to produce.  The photos below show how that area was handled on typical British sporting guns.

Here it is on a TN squirrel rifle.

The cutting stage on the above rifle;

Start by marking the midpoint on your barrel side flat. I draw a line from stem to stern with a sharpie on both sides and carefully lower the wood alongside the barrel to my line. after you get the wood to half a flat you are ready to make the sloping transition along the tang to your forestock wood.

I use a sanding block to lower the wood alongside the barrel as well as thin the wood where it meets the barrel.

I prevent slab sidedness by checking with a contour gage.

I am also a rank beginner so others are bound to have a better way of doing things than I do.

Refer to originals. This sweepy thing down to the barrel may be correct in some cases but in general you rarely see it in American work.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Hi Mike,
If you look at his photos it appears he is not making American work but a British trade gun.

Were Brit trade guns scooped there? If so I've been building them wrong for the past 35 years! ;D

Sorry, I rarely have time for more than a light glance at most posts these days, very busy trying to catch up on my backlog.

Is this detail something that a builder should think about when deciding where to position the rear
Lock bolt?  Thanks

Hi,
Yes.  It is usually a good idea to do research before building and draw up plans.
