Hunting Pouch with embroidered fraktur insert
« on: August 30, 2019, 04:58:48 AM »
This is not strictly historically correct, but I wanted to combine my fraktur work with my leather and horn work.   This hunting pouch is the first of that effort.  It is the best pouch I know how to make combined with an original fraktur embroidery insert.   I also plan a powder horn, but that will be down the road a ways.   I have some other projects I want to finish first.

The fraktur is representative of Jesus Christ (in the form of the peacock) as the human face of the trinity  (in the form of three tulips on each branch of the tree of life stemming from the heart of God) and the model for our lives.   It is stitched on natural duck canvas using cotton embroidery floss.

The pouch itself is the best that I know how to make.   It is made of 2-3 oz vegetable tan cowhide, fully lined with a period red print, and incorporating rolled welts and rolled bindings of calfskin.   The pouch is 8 1/2″ x 9″ overall with a main storage area that is about 5″ x 8″.   There is an internal pocket for small items.  The strap passes through the top of the apron and is stitched inside the pouch for the cleanest possible appearance.  The strap can be adjusted via a brass buckle to a maximum of 50″ top of bag to top of bag, but the short section of the strap may be replaced to lengthen the strap if necessary.

I have over 40 hours of work in this bag.

It looks great to me.  It’s neat that it has a story/ meaning associated with it.

Super nice work, Mark!  I can’t wait to see what you come up with for a matching horn!

Thanks for all the nice comments.   Based on the feedback I have received on and off-line, I definitely plan to make more copies of this bag with original fraktur embroidery.   I have already done the design for the next bag.

I like what you have done - I've not seen another like it or even close - keep it up. Did you but the leather already dyed it looks very soft for being veg tanned - where did you purchase it from?

The bulk of the leather is 2-3 oz Tandy veg tan; the cheaper grade.   The bindings, welts, and flap lining are Tandy veg tan calf skin; very expensive.  It is all stained before assembly with Vinegar and iron stain that I make.

Really nice Work Mark. I did something similar once and boiled it on orange pekoe tea, scared the $#@* out of myself after all the time I put into it, but it came out a nice old timey looking color. Either way, that's a beautiful job.
