Axis Deer Antler
« on: September 03, 2019, 10:44:46 PM »
Some of you may know that I had been looking for good deer antler for powder horn tips.    I ordered some grade A Axis deer antler sheds off of ebay.   I had previously cut up and drilled the antler and was very optimistic about it, but I just got around to turning it.   I wanted to report that I couldn't be more pleased.   The antler was dense, and even, and white all the way through.   It turned relatively easily for bone using cryogentically hardened HSS.   I finished it with just with a skew chisel and scrapers at about 1000 RPM and it looks like polished ivory.  I have attached a photo of an antler blank and the finished product.

It definitely looks quite nice, better than whitetail, IMHO.

Yep that axis antler is good stuff. I've found that moose antler can be really good also but you need to be able to pick your own.

I'll have to look into getting some of the axis antler.  Like Mr Barker stated moose antler turns really nice too.   This tip is from some moose antler I had.

A small priming horn I fabricated from an axis shed I picked up in South Texas. Nothing fancy. But good antler to work with for sure!
