I have several to build. BUY Grinslade's book on Colonial fowling guns.

Daniel, I would agree that by far Grinslades book on Flintlock Fowlers is the best source for firearms of this sort. I've worn out my first copy and working on my second. If you would like some pictures of the Fowlers I have build using this book for reference I could (I think) post some pictures of Hudson Valley Fowlers, Club butt and New England Fowlers.

Hopefully we have some pictures of various Hudson Valley Fowlers. Some were build from an original I had on loan and some but the information supplied in Tom Grinslades book. Hope they are what yoju had in mind.

He'll even let you handle them if you bring your own white gloves.

I had always thought of Club Butts as being quite ungainly, kind of ugly in fact. I think it was mostly older, B & W pictures that I had seen.
The club butt rifles above are, very simply, very beautiful.  And they seem to "want" you to go shoot them.  They are sleek, graceful, and well engineered - so thanks for enlightening me.

They are my favorite style for making Turkey Mashers, the architecture is excellent for big bores with heavy loads.

What kind of weight do they have, Mike?  I do like big bores/heavy loads, but life has placed me in a condition where I have to start lightening up the "bump".  I have always enjoyed the "turkey smashers".  Next rifle will be a .62 Don Stith- I also like reaching out for a paper target or steel gong, and there is almost no way to escape the heavier recoil except to raise the weight of the rifle a bit.
I guess I could also stick one or two of Brownell's mercury-filled recoil tubes into the butt....  Several years ago I made a 12 ga for a fellow with a separated shoulder.  Put three of those in the stock, and it could be fired with one hand.  Not any room for a patch box though.
Could be that the lowered butt of the club-butt could help re-direct some of the energy.

Lovely work Ken.  Outstanding!

I have an old (1690-1710) barrel marked to Thomas Bannister, and these photos are getting me all enthused to get it stocked and locked  once again!
(54" barrel).
