Well, I'll be consulting with an eye surgeon soon, via my ophthalmologist's referral.  If he advises me that he thinks it's a good idea to operate on the (R) retina, I may go through with it.  Right now if I focus on anything - front sight, for instance - it disappears due to the blind spot.

My glaucoma, cataract ridden eyes get some relief from a product called “Refresh.”

www.refreshbrand.com/Products

Radiation treatments partially dried up my right eye and those “Refresh” artificial tears are a real help.  They are frequently used.

My daughter-in-law worked the the eye center at Vanderbilt for years, when I mentioned Lasik to her she said they didn't do it on people over 60 (not sure about the age) because they would be candidates for cataract surgery in a short period of time.

Hey all.. I've made several rear sights with a 1/8" hole in them. Put them on the barrel wherever you like. The hole works like an aperture but from the side it looks like any ole rear sight. Front sight and target are clear as a bell. Hole may appear fuzzy but that doesn't matter.
Not legal for match shooting but there are so few matches nowadays and at almost 71 yrs old---who cares?
Make the sight a bit tall and put the hole just below the notch position. I put mine 10-12" forward of the breech.

My shooting glasses are actually a .75 reading glass.  Very mild reader! My normal readers are a 2.50.
Allows fear sight to reappear, and still allows good distance vision.
Must be very mild, or you won't see past the muzzle.

How big is that aperture? I will go out to the shop and make me a similar sight to try this afternoon, it just might work for me.

Apertures need to be different sizes for different eyes and levels of light.  Its better to start with a too small aperture and open it up until YOU can see your front sight and target.  Start at 1/16" and try 1/64" at a time.  What you perceive as "perfect" in bright light will be too small when the light fades.  I have an adjustable iris on one of sights on a modern rifle.

"peep sights" work best when as close to the eye as possible.

Exactly, Dane. I picked up .25, .50 and .75 diopter readers.  With the .25's, the sights are better, and with the .50's they are almost good.

With the .75's both sights are sharp - the targets are a little more fuzzy, but the centre of the fuzz just happens to be the target. This system works.

I should have noted in that last post, that diopters 1.0 and over are too powerful for me and make the targets too fuzzy. As well, they would be absolutely useless for hunting.
I would suggest for hunting, anything over about .5's would not do well, unless your "game ranges" are very close.

It might be sacrilege but I put two dots of fluorescent paint on my rear sight and painted my front blade with the stuff, I can see my sights right up to last light now. In the last picture I charged the front sight with a flashlight to make it glow after dark, the glow lasts about 10 minutes. Under evening hunting conditions the normal day light makes the sights a visible white almost to dark, no charging necessary.

I quit hunting with my flintlock because I couldn't see the sights, these little dots have me back in the woods doing what I like the most, flintlock hunting.

I've painted the front sight on all my barrels with a white paint.  It helps in the shaded woods but not after dark.  I have to wear 1.25  diopter readers and can see the front sight - retinal damage still won't allow satisfactory alignment.  Around here I haven't found anything below 1.25, though is another city I came across a 1.00.  Should have picked it up right then.

You might be able to find them online Hanshi. I went to my eye doc and got a pair of precription computer glasses with the right focal point length for my computer and it works out for my main hunting rifle too.

I went to the range yesterday and found my fluorescent dots and front blade changed everything, back to the drawing board. At 100 yards I was hitting 12 " low and to the right for a horrible group. At 50 I was 6" low and to the right for a grapefruit sized group. I don't know what has changed, last time I shot the rifle I could put 5 shots touching in the bull at 50 yards. I suspect the fluorescent paint supplied too much information to try to align correctly.

The only good thing I can think of about being old is that it takes a long time.

One of my old customers used to say "don,t stop living till you die". I think he wanted to say have fun when you can cause when your dead your dead for a long time.  ;D Take it for what its worth I guess.  :)

ERIC...USE THE FORCE...

Either that, or read Mike Brooks' post again because most of that is going to gang up on all of us.

I'd get a second opinion about the cataracts and then decide how much you really love that rifle.   I know if I could not focus on my wife I'd cut a groove and install .....nah.  Just kidding...
