My way theses days is to invest in a sight to suit ageing eyes as one may grow into it , Steven.

I ordered some rare earth magnets from China (hope they don't come with the pandemic) that are drilled and countersunk. The are 15 MM with a 3 MM hole. I am going to flatten one edge and place one at various places on my tang, barrel and breechplug to see if there is an optimum place for a peep.

The are supposed to be very strong magnets, 10 of them cost $2, shipped free.

Being magnets I would think they would stay put but to get the hole the right height will take a little experimenting and filing.

just call Lowell Haarer he has a web site. no changes, no drilling just a longer tang screw/bolt he will ask about your front and rear sight height and hole size (peep) thread and bolt length

I bought 5 of those from some place in the States, kept 2 or 3 and gave the others to Taylor and Len(local chaps). Interesting and they do stay in place, but of course the height is fixed.

Last year Lowell Haarer was at the Alabama Kentucky longrifle show. My friend told me he had the peeps there last year, he didn't make it to the show this year, I was looking for him.

I noticed a while back that my right eye was really starting to have some vision loss. I went to a shooting match and found out that it was so bad that I couldn't see the target at 90 feet. I am 64 and right handed; so I started shooting off my left shoulder and managed to win a match. I didn't go back anymore. I did make an eye appt 2 weeks ago and found out that I need cataract surgery. I go to the eye dr. this Thursday to find out when the surgery will be scheduled. I told my wife and a buddy or 2 that I was going to talk to the surgeon to see if he could put me in a range finding lens that might be good out to about 600 yards. Haha! I'll have to see what sense of humor he has before I spring that on him. I'll keep you posted with out things go. Maybe will surgery will be within the next month. Everyone is talking about peep sites; my transition yeager has a 31" barrel, I put a fiber optic on the front and a peep site on the rear that I can take out the aperture and just look through the hole it threads into. It works well for late evening shooting. I really enjoy reading all these posts. Best regards.

I at the age of 65 notices on my right eye I have some light misty sight, so decided tot see a specialist.
Question for the guys who did surgery!
Did you go for a trifocal lense or something Else?

I had another eye checkup the other day, my Dr said he was wrong about his last guesstimate on when I would be needing cataract surgery, he said it looks more like 2 or 3 years down the road at least before he would recommend me.

I like to make stuff so it looks like a tang mounted peep for my flintlock deer rifle will be my next project. I ordered countersunk round rare earth magnets with a hole in them from china before the virus hit, but they never arrived

I had the surgery to both eyes this past winter. Best thing to ever happen for me. 20/20 vision both eyes. No glasses now except for reading.
I didn't get the tri focal lens. I have no problem seeing the sights on my rifles now.

Iloco, did they placed Multifocal instead of tri Focal?
I would not mind reading glasses, I use them now to!
Just my frontsight is a little blurry now. Even with my percussion frontstuffer with diopter.
Now I use wide vision glasses?

I can not answer your question until I go back to my eye Doctor and ask what type lens I have. All I know is getting them has let me see things I had forgotten I could see. With this Virus problem my next appointment has been canceled untll its safe to have one..

hawkeye, I had both eyes done one month apart in 2010. I just had the single vision lens used. Came out great! I did not use the multi-lens because it had some limitations. The main one was bright lighting can cause problems. I had the bright light problem with my cataracts. At night when an approaching car came, I had to lower my eyes and steer to the right. I did not want that problem again.
I do use reading glasses for up close. I shoot better now than I did 20 years ago.

The latest cataract replacement lenses include the Torix version that is multifocal and corrects astigmatism and solves the problems from a decade ago The bad news is that they are not covered by my Medicare insurance. I'll pay the full price. Cheaper than a custom muzzleloader.

A Lowell Haarer style tang peep might possible keep you going and not alter your rifle. Just need a long tang bolt. God Bless, Marc

Yes, that's the part I like best. Plus, it looks like something that might have been on the original rifle. As you said it's easy on and off too.
