Coolest Barn Gun/Schimmel Ever!
« on: October 30, 2019, 08:01:04 PM »
Hey Guys, :)
Can we start a thread for the most awesome barn gun ever found, or at least photos some of your favorites.
I've never owned one, but I've always loved the simplicity they display and intend to build one.
I know there's a lot of interest in these rifles so I'm hoping some great pictures will result.

Greetings Redheart,

There are images of some plain vanilla guns, including one that resides with me, in a thread titled Rarity of “Poor Boys”?:

My old relic is pictured there as well. BUY Ivey's book on NC rifles, lots of "poor boys" in that book. BUY Noble's four volumes on southern rifles. loads of Poor Boys in those. BUY Grinslade's book on American fowling guns. Loads of "poor boy" fowling guns in there. If you want to learn anything about these an investment would really help your research.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Bob Lienemann did a thread on "plane and perdy riffles" you might find interesting. Just do a search for "blienemann ".

Here's one about as plain as can be. Far from awesome but no doubt got the job done.
The lock seems original to the gun, the flint cock,,, maybe,,, maybe not...
The busted forearm was held in place with a wrapped wire, but most is gone now,
The one nice touch, though not really visible in the pics, is a tiny curl on the tip of the trigger.

I still think that probably the coolest I've seen is on the wall down at Dixon's, looks like a late 18th century Bucks Co. area piece.  Many here are familiar with it, been there for at least 30 years if not longer.  That is one spectacular "barn gun."  To my mind, it was roughed out by one of the Bucks Co. 'names' and ready to be further finished, but then went out the door as-is to someone who just needed a rifle to go bang.  Don't think it's ever been published anywhere.

Dave Rase built a beauty a while back, I saved the pictures but they are not mine to post. Rough and beautiful lines.

Once I wrapped my head around the idea that top-notch gun-stockers made these as inventory that could be fancied up later, or sold as is, they got a lot more interesting to me.  I'm not saying that's the only way they were made, but that it seems quite plausible to me.

Not a Poor boy or Schimmel, but I'm the current caretaker of a plain working rifle from the Deep River NC School that was collected in Arkansas by Ray McKnight.

Ditto, Wayne...I like that little rifle a LOT!  That one would be a great model for a future project.

I have made a mold of the trigger guard and have the castings in stock.  Many years ago this rifle was listed in the want ads in the Houston Chronicle.  They had calls on it before I discovered it but nobody wanted it because it didn't have a butt plate.  I DID!!!  Original flint.

Iron.  I made a mold from it and had the guards cast in mild steel.
