question for all you experienced shooters
« on: October 30, 2019, 08:11:45 PM »
I ;m new to flint locks , I just purchased a early English fouler (20ga) and was wondering what kind of life expectancy I should get out of 1'' flints on average. I;M using English flints from the Brampton mines. Look forward to your opinions any information you can offer.  thankyou  walt.

There are so many variables to consider. I get on an average about 60+ shots out of several makes and models of locks.

Depends on the lock. Jim Chambers locks usually get about a hundred shots per flint. You may have to knap it once or twice.

I've got from 5 to over 100 shots from various flints.  This usually included a bit of knapping after 20-30 shots in order to keep it going.  Average?  Just a guess but I'd say 40 to 60 or 70.

Jim Chambers locks give me the most shots from a flint.  I will guess at 60 to 70.  I buy the English ones from Track of the Wolf.  Also Rich Pierce white flints from Missouri however he does not make them anymore.  Tuned L&R locks I would say I get 40 to 50.
