Build ideas?
« on: November 01, 2019, 05:41:24 PM »
Starting my 2nd plank build....figured I'd see what comes to your minds.

I have a pretty light weight 42" Rice octagon to round rifled 62cal.  Breech is big but she's a light little barely...its inlet into a nice hard stick of maple that is pretty plain.

Lock is going to be Kiblers roundfaced lock.

Gun will be a personal hunting rifle.  I like lighter guns and not looking for a beefstick. Recoil isn't an issue but don't want something that will blast my check.

I like earlier stuff..wooden boxes...earlier simpler brass boxes...(aka I can't engrave yet...lol). I can handle "simpler" carving but not elaborate stuff.

I have ideas....quick scan through RCA and Longrifles Notes and I just can't decide what it wants to be.  Won't necessarily be a bench copy.  But I like to have ideas and stuff to reference.

Figured you guys may have some specific rifles that come to mind.

RCA 19 is stocked in walnut but who cares, could be the next one off the bench was in maple. Simple carving. Furniture is available from mold and gun shop I think. Mike Brooks and others have used this one as the basis for a good many builds. I made one in .54. The original was a smoothbore. The pix below are the original beside a copy (not mine).

Make your front sight wicked tall or because of the taper that thing will shoot crazy high. Kibler’s round faced lock or any English lock would not be my first choice but is still quite plausible.

Thanx Rich!

RCA #19 has always been a rifle I've liked.  Architecture just looks like it'd be a real comfortable rifle to shoot.

Lines up with what I had in my mind... something similar and call it "my take on an early colonial rifle"

The Woodsrunner is another that always catches my eye...and seeing Joe's latest post reminded me of it.  Not sure how friendly that stock shape is..but if I recall correctly the original was a bigger bore..58 maybe?   Recoil doesn't bother me on earlier style rifles.  I think it had a full octagon barrel and roundfaced lock.

I have one of Kiblers kits in the white I bought to help me figure out my first plank build.

I'm not looking for a bench copy...but I do like to stay in the realm of possibilities and have a "target" so to speak.

I've found a few different rifles Allen Martin has done with similar architecture and roundfaced or early ketland style locks.

I was itching to get my hands on Jim's lock...and it fits the barrel and will make a dandy hunting lock I'm sure.

Good call on the front sight. I hadn't considered that or ran into that issue yet.  I will have to keep that in mind.

Dave, didn't want to hijack the 58cal thread....

That rifle you posted is real similar in architecture to what I kinda had in my head....is it based on anything particular?    Obviously a little more embellished than I would do.  My first plank is similar... loosely based on the Albrecht rifle that was basically in pieces in RCA.

Finish work still isn't completely done in those pics but I had to take her hunting lol.

I like that style rifle.   I've seen several similar rifles with English locks but can't seem to find what they are actually based on.   Like I said, I can build it and call it my take on an early colonial rifle.  Just don't want the sky to fall when I use an English lock lol.

Wow, nice seeing some color close-ups of RCA 19.  Thanks for posting and good luck to Mauser on the new build.  Looking forward to pictures when finished.
My profile picture is my beloved K9 best friend and soulmate, Buster Brown, who passed away in 2018.  I miss you buddy!

Those pictures were not or of #19. That is a sister gun to it. And a bench copy

It shares many of the same features as the 19 gun .

RCA 17 is another good early gun to use as the basis for a big bore gun.
