Some English Scratching(New photo's added)
« on: November 02, 2019, 03:12:13 PM »
Been doing some English style engraving this week. It's not a style I do much of so it's been fun.Based on original work done in the Ketland shop.

Are you using construction adhesive to mount the pieces to you form?

Hi Mitch,
That is looking great!  I think you have the style down.  Two things I discovered examining engraving on 18th century British guns is that they used a round bottomed graver to scoop out deeper relief such as the interior of a volute or curled leaf.  You really see it well when looking at parts on which the engraving is worn.  The other feature I've noticed that they often created deep shadow and dark relief by using a square graver and mashing it into the shadowed area not worrying much about nice parallel or neat shading lines.  Once filled with dirt and gunk, it looks just as good as any banknote style shading.
Anyway, well done Mitch and I would love to see the gun those parts are for.

I think I need to send my Lancaster side plate to Mitch for decorating.  Really nice work, Mr. Yates!

Yep.  Nice work.  I like the delicate floral / leaf engraving with the stronger border.  Looks very much like the real deal.

The butt plate is set in Bondo and the side plate is stuck with chasers pitch.

I totally understand the round graver detail but am not picturing the square graver method in my mind .If you have a photo of an original with that detail I'd greatly appreciate seeing it.Always looking to improve the overall presentation.

Looks really good to me. I doubt that most originals were as good. From what I've seen.

Looks beautiful.  One idea...  Make a panel that outlines the initials on the box lid.  The shells / flowers on each end would then butt up against the ends of the panel.  This will ground them.  Think this will help.  Just a thought.  Great work!

That us some very nice work, and I have to agree that the panel borders definitely make a big difference.  It looks very good to me, and hope to someday be able to do work like that.
