I’ve never posted my work on this site. Thanks to my friend, Marc. I guess you’ll see a little of it. This is a little rifle I built for a guy that can no longer use his heavy rifle. I used a short swamped .45 Rice barrel, a small Siler flintlock and some curly hickory I cut a few years ago. The stock was scraped to finish. It was stained with aqua Fortas and highlighted with a little thinned dark brown leather dye. I didn’t try to fill the grain at all. It sure made a light easy handling rifle to be hickory.

That is right perfect if you ask me. That's a very nice looking stock.

Being hickory, you could probably beat a bear to death with it without a scratch!  ;D

Tim, that’s a piece of the same wood as the piece I gave you a couple of years ago. The only rifle I would make out of it would have to be slim and trim to keep the weight down. I have another started but don’t know when I’ll get back to it.

I love it, Bob!  Hickory has been on my mind for many years but most of the great curly hickory I've had ended up being firewood (and knife and tomahawk handles)!

Great job!  Looks like it stepped right out of the backwoods!!

Bob can weigh in here.  I handled that one and I would be very surprised if it was over 6 pounds.  Maybe 5 and change. 

When Bob handed me that stock blank two years ago, I immediately thought, "Boat anchor.  What is he going to do with that?"  I should have known better.  It is one lively little gun, and I'd swear it's no heavier than one in maple with the same dimensions. 

I know it is a bear to work with, but the end result looks worth it to me.  I love the way you get walnut-like open grain with maple-like curl.  It sure took Aqua Fortis well.  Hard to improve on the color and appearance.  I think the scraped finish was a sharp decision here too.

I didn’t weigh it. Marc’s guess is pretty close I’d say. It does handle great.

Why I like most about it is that it genuinely looks like an old rifle.  Not a fantasy piece, not a metropolitan piece of perfection, it just looks like a really cool old gun.  I too really like to see a stock of hickory - it's already got my gears turning!

Love that gun. If you told me it was a well-cared for original, I'd have believed it 100%. I was going to say my youngest son would have a ball carrying around that little rifle- but I think I'd enjoy it just as much.

Umm curly hickory, must be that SC low land coastal hickory, don't think I have seen any of that here in Piedmont VA. Have seen a piece or two of curly oak.

It's not just the low country. I bought a cord of firewood from a local fellow here in the upstate. I'm not kidding that a good third of it was curly hickory. I got on to him about cutting up that much good hickory just for firewood.  He's promised to hold out the good wood for me, but I'm not holding my breath.

Bob does indeed have large hands, but that rifle is also slim. 

Jim, I think some curly hickory would be beautiful on your mountain rifle kits.  That architecture is so slim, it wouldn't add much weight at all.  How do you think it will work with your machinery?
