A saved rifle build
« on: November 09, 2019, 11:09:28 PM »
A year ago August, I let an old friend talk me into 'finishing up' a rifle he'd started.  In his mid 80's, and he unable to take the rifle to fruition, it seemed at the time to be a good project.  In retrospect, it would have been easier, faster, and turned out better, if I had started from scratch.  But once into the build, there comes a time when there's no turning back.  Well, the rifle's done, and it turned out fine in my opinion, and I feel good about the exercise.  Several of the parts I had to replace or build myself, add wood where wood should not have been removed, and cut away all of the 'contemporary' funkiness that the owner had added.  As with many builders, he'd left enough wood so I could do that, and still end up with a rifle of decent proportions.  And his parts selection was excellent:  .32 cal Green Mt. barrel, Bob Roller percussion lock, and W. Cain single set triggers.  I think he was aiming at a contemporary rifle based on the half stocked target style rifles of RW Soper, from Canada West.  At least that's what came to me remembering the rifles I saw as a boy in South Western Ontario.
So, here it is warts and all...feel free to offer critique, good and bad.

Bob, the lock is a gem.  The half cock brings the hammer to just clear the nipple, and the full cock is a very short fast throw.  All internals are polished like a Swiss watch.  I know this kind of Eastern rifle appeals to you.  thanks for your comment.

I like it.  My taste in percussion guns favours the Soper rifles.  A good friend of mine, now passed, had a nice collection of them. You did a great job, Taylor.

Taylor, I think if you worked blindfolded, with one arm tied behind your back,  and wearing a mitten on the other hand, your work would still be great.  Nice gun.

You definitely saved it. Very nice Taylor! I really like the way the browning goes with the stock finish.

Uh, warts?  Well I didn't see any, at least not on the rifle.  Maybe you're talking about those two little black spots on the edge of the photo.  If that rifle has warts, I want some.

Thanks Mr. Reader.  I think that Derek will enjoy owning and shooting this piece.  With the fast Roller lock and the Cain triggers, the action could not be sweeter or faster.  I was amazed that Derek could make this trigger guard out of five pieces of sheet brass, and then inlet the triggers a full 1/8" off centre!  The last picture when enlarged by clicking on it twice, reveals the slab of wood I added to centre the trigger set.  And I also added maple, selected for it's curl to match the rifle, to the lock inlet.  But what a nice piece of maple he found!  It is West Coast broad leaf maple, but is as hard as anything I've ever worked, except for ebony.

 Taylor,
I have seen many pieces of your work from all different schools and styles. Do you have one style rifle that you Really like/prefer to do? Maybe a straight Taylor school.
I am not a half stock fan but on this one I make an exception.

Taylor you did a fine job. The wood is splendid and overwhelms any imperfections that seem obvious to you.

You guys are very generous with your comments, and I appreciate it.  I don't know what breech PLUG it is.  It has a 'comma' or snail motife and a large hook.  The tang or standing breech that came with the parts as I received them was very small, had been welded up poorly on the inside and outside, and was a disaster.  I had a similar cast tang in my collection of parts and was able to enlarge the female rectangular hole to receive the plug's hook.  That solved two problems as both tang holes had been drilled in the wrong place and the inlet needed saving.
As Daryl said, we're going to sight this baby in this morning...it's -10 C. so we'll start at 11 am hoping it'll warm up a bit.  I'll post a few pics of that if I remember to take my camera.
