Hi Folks,

Just finished up a pouch, and it is made from well-broken 3-4 ounce soft bridle leather. The flap is 2-3 ounce cowhide lined with 2-3 ounce bridle leather. Stitched with heavy waxed linen thread for longevity. It has an internal pocket. The "bearded" welting is very soft buckskin left over from my bearded bag project. No sense in letting it go to waste.

The overall pattern is similar to one I made to go with Ron Hess' horn for Jim Parker's Alabama Show. Remember, just two short months until that show.

I call this bag "Mortality" as the image on the flap confronts us with our short time here on earth. This was a common image in the 1700's, and I saw this particular one in Williamsburg. I guess it could also say something about the mortality of the animal being hunted. I drew a pattern of the image and scribed it into the cowhide.

That's a very neat bag Marc. I like to sew the inside back pocket a little higher - closer to the top, so it's easier to get balls out, but that's just me. I like the colour and the fringe.

Many thanks for the kind words. Interesting where inspiration comes from sometimes. In this case it was that image in Williamsburg.

Wayne, I am not sure on having it in Alabama. With family health issues around in several states, I am hoping I will be able to get away for the show. We'll see.

Hi James,

I don't know the weight of the waxed thread I am using. It looks to be about 1/32" in diameter. When I hammer it after I finish stitching, it looks fatter against the leather.

Is that the same bag I watched you reverse and smooth out on Sunday at there Camden event? It turned out really nice. I really like the tooled design as well. Great job.

Thank you Cheney. I dye the back of the strap with thinned light color dye, then seal it. I have zero tolerance for bags or straps that transfer dye to clothes when someone sweats or gets rained on. God Bless, Marc

Hi Mike,

I am no blacksmith, and did not make that buckle. I bought it from H&B Forge. They have both round and square.

I will say this, they take a long time to fill your order, so be prepared. They do eventually come. I ordered one of each (round and square) to see if I liked them. Once they came okay, I ordered a bigger batch. Both took quite a while to deliver. I clean each up, rub back the edges, and clear coat them with flat lacquer to prevent rust.

If anyone has a good source for blacksmith looking iron buckles that are a bit lighter in construction, I would appreciate a note.
