Where do I buy leather today?
« on: July 16, 2009, 04:13:12 AM »
Hi folks.  At 60, I can't claim to be new, or new to the sport.  I am attempting to make my current rifle more authentic than I did 40+ years ago however.  I have a green river blade with which I intend to make the patch and general purpose knife.    In the olden days, I just drove over to Tandys and had them cut off the leather I needed to make the sheath.  WHere do I get small pieces of good quality leather today?  Tandy on-line wants to sell me the whole cow.   ???

What style sheath goes with a kit from 1800?

Thanks in advance,

Frog

Ps.  I envy  you guys named "Ripping the guts out o grizzlys", but frogwalking has been my handle for over 15 years.  Like all good names it was bestowed on me.  (by a frog, of course.)
Quality, schedule, price; Pick any two.

Frogwalking,

You can try this link if I can manage to get posted, they usually have some nice "scrap" pieces and if I'm not mistaken if you just need a small piece they will cut one for you.

Will cut to size and sell small quantities........
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Not sure if you mean right at 1800 or beyond that.

Green River knives did not come out until 1837, so it would have to be a good bit beyond 1800 unless you modify the knife blade to an earlier style.

If you are doing "Mountain Man," then a tack knife sheath would be appropriate.

Or an early 1800 military style sheath,

If not, then  simple wrap around, pouch style would be correct.

Sorry, I just realized that my links may not or did not include information on using a welt in the sheath.  A welt is cut and inserted as both protection to the sharp edge of the knife and so it won't cut through the sheath.  I've seen knives cut through sheaths without welts, so I always use them in "fold over" or  "pouch style" sheaths.  Here is a link showing what a welt is and how you add one.

If you are trying to find somewhere locally, you might want to check out a cobbler shop or saddlery shop.  They should have smaller pieces left over for sale.
