Hurricane Memory Horn

A few months ago our own ALR member, Hurricane, asked me if I could make him a memory horn.  He wanted a horn that could be passed down through the family.  We corresponded a bit and he gave me several things that he would like featured on the horn.  I thought a good long time, did some research, and produced this horn for him.

I attempted to keep the horn as traditional as possible while incorporating what he wanted on the horn. The horn is a French & Indian War era horn   that is 16" - 17" long on the outside curve.  When I photographed the horn outside only the first photograph came out the true color of the horn. The rest of the pictures didn't, but you can still get the idea of Hurricane's new horn.

Excellent job Randy!  I'm sure Hurricane will love this and the engravings of the family members will become subject of much treasured memories as time passes.

 WOW! That is beautiful work, the horn work itself, neck, engraling, panels on the tip and the lobe are outstanding. The design and layout is VERY well done. Add the base plug, that is a beauty all by itself and then the engraving, not to mention the color, Holy Cow! That horn will indeed be a family heirloom, You and owner should be very Proud.

Really nice work Randy!!! Reminds me of the stuff I used to do before arthritis set into my knuckles. I guess that's why have liked all your horn work I've seen.

That’s an unbelievably fine horn Randy, and have never seen one done for a family like that. I’m sure Fred and Family will cherish it always!
I especially like your rendition of Fred with a bird perched atop his head! ;D

The yellow color of the horn, that only shows in three of the pictures, was done with Rit dye.

You probably already know, but the Indian with the bird on his head is sort of my trademark that I put on all F&I War and AWI scrimshaw horns that I make.

A couple of years ago I was getting ready to scrimshaw a horn and I told my wife I was thinking about putting something funny on the horn.  My wife asked what would be funny and I said how about an Indian with a bird sitting on his head.  It worked so well that I started using it as a trademark.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the kind words about this horn.  I have never done a memory horn like this one, but it was a fun project for me.  Usually when I do a F&I or AWI scrimshaw horn I know exactly what I am going to scrimshaw on it before I start the horn. On this one I think I spent more time thinking about the scrimshaw and researching different things then it took to actually do the scrimshaw.

I waited a bit to thank Randy in public so I could getthe horn back on the top of the forum one more time. It is absolutely fabulous and my family is most pleased, particularly Ben.
