Small 8 to breaks the ice
« on: November 20, 2019, 05:17:45 PM »
Monday was Bama's opener for the season an I had a small 8 pt volunteer to be the first to jump in the freezer this yr. Went after work. Got on stand at 3:30 an introduced him to my Joe Schell woodsrunner 62 at 4:15 he dropped at the shot an flopped around like a fish out of water for a few yards. Got my hopes for a big 10 pt that I know is in the area but if I see him im sure it will take the rut to make him move in daylight.

Good way to open things up. I was ready to go but twisted my ankle and am waiting on some healing so I can get down in the woods, maybe next week, I hope.

Nice job! Caliber and load used please. Don't need to send the back straps (that would be greedy) a nice roast will do.

I'm hoping to blood my .54 Schell woodsrunner this week.  Tried Monday but got in the wrong stand.  I could see'em but not shoot'em.  I have a couple of .62 rifles.  Did 80gr push the ball through the deer?

That's actually a nice buck, wattle.  Haven't been out myself so far; not used to this rotten Northeast weather.  You have a very nice rifle.

Thanks guy's. Brice I have shot quite a few things over my 6 or seven yrs since switching to a 62 cal an 80 gn load an have yet to recover a ball. Now understand all my hunting shots are 60 yds an under with the major majority being 25 to 30 range so 80 gns is a plenty but I really like the size holes them 600 balls punch. Ive yet to run into anything that take it an the few that have ran have left blood trails a dummy like me can follow. The furthest I can remember one going is about 40 yds or so an there was a red trail leading right to him

Not many medium size animals would make it far when the wheelhouse is gone with that size hole. The fluid shock alone would probably kill the deer.

Good looking buck and nice rifle. My youngest son uses a .62 for everything because he likes the big hole and obvious blood trail. He also uses 80 grains, but has one with .610 and one with .626 ball.  You have a winning combination for sure.  Good work.

Very nice Bambino. That rifle is stunning and I love the bag and horn, what a great combo.
