Finished my Beck
« on: July 17, 2009, 02:46:12 AM »
Still a few tiny things to finish up on it yet, but mainly done.  .54, 44" C barrel, Beck stock, lots of the carving on it I based on the Beck in the archives as I really liked that one and it was different from most in the books.

Great looking rifle.  Brass Lockplate????  I really like the color on the wood.  And the carving stands out nicely.  Great job.  Thanks for sharing.

Everybody says nice things about new guns, that isn't the way to learn.  If someone doesn't point out things that don't
look right, you will continue to do it.   I don't think I have ever seen a Beck with that fancy scalloping out along the barrel
in the foregrip area, where did you come up with that.   On your next gun, unless it's a southern mountain rifle, I would
forget those fancy nose caps, they detract more than they add.   Another pet gripe of mine is the trigger.   When you pull
it out of the bag, take some files and turn it into a "Beck" trigger, not a generic thing that someone else created.  Also,
your lock panel could be trimmed down.   You appear to have some good artistic talent, the design of your carving looks
good, very Beck like.  A lot of the things that you have done wrong are common things that many new gunbuilders do, so
don't feel bad.  I would enter it into the judging at Dixon's, the critique sheet that they will give you in the end is meant
to point out what you should do differently.  If you are like me, and many other builders, you will be anxious to get started
on the next one, and will continue to improve.  Hate to tell you this but, I'm 76 years old, and still learning...........Don

I agree with Don about the trigger and nose cap, but one our members has shown an orig. Beck (last year)with the same scallops along the forearm, so they are good. Something wrong with the side plate and it's panel though (at least in my eyes). I think its a combination of too much curve to the underside of the plate and the panels being too wide. Both the trigger and side plate could still be remade at this point, but I'm not saying you should.
Aside from those details, it is a faithful rendition of a fancy Beck. You've done a beautiful job on it and John Philip would approve of it! ;)
I would like to see a closeup of the patchbox!

I don’t generally comment on new rifles as I don’t build them, but just collect old ones instead.
So would like to say I really like the layout and execution of you carving and the general workmanship on your rifle, as it’s obvious that you’ve put a tremendous amount of time and effort into it.

I agree with the other posts congratulating you on the job, but also agree with Don with his helpful hints for future rifles. Along that line, I’d like to point out a few other things that you might want to consider in the future.

The front sight. For some reason it seems the norm to perch a gigantic front sight on rifles today. Maybe this is leaving excess to be filed down during sighting in, but on originals the front sight is rarely more than about 1/8” tall.

The rear sight is generally more or less positioned atop the ramrod entry pipe area, as opposed to far to the rear where you’ve put yours. Although, perhaps this rearward positioning is for your eyesight?

Don has pointed out that the lock panel could be slimmed down some, and I’ll extend that thought to include the entire forearm, as it just looks to tall, top to bottom, to me. I think lowering the top line of the forearm down a bit, a 1/16” or so, to show more barrel, then taking a bit off the bottom of the forearm would make a slimmer and more pleasing forearm, and would also slim the top and bottom of the lock panel as well.  The amount I’d suggest trimming the bottom of the forearm is about the amount of space you have between the muzzle cap and the ramrod brass tip. I realize this might create interference with the forward lock bolt, and thin wood on the rear part of the forearm, but the ol’ guys did it and so can you.
(As a note, perhaps the forearm top line is centered at midline of the barrel flat, which seems to be some sort of rule, but I’m not sure that rule should be followed without variance, in regards to creating a slim forearm.)

Don has already pointed to the trigger, and I’ll just suggest that making a trigger from a piece of mild steel flatbar is really a pretty easy task, and would delete that ‘out of the bag’ look.

And the same for the frizzen; a little judicious grinding could make it look more at home and less out of the bag.

And Don doesn’t like the muzzle cap,(he’s old, what’s he know ;D) but Fordney and others did and they can look very nice on the appropriate rifle. Keep in mind the time period of the rifle you’re creating, as cap length, shape and decoration varied with time period and maker/school.

The last picture of the cheek side of the rifle really shows your exceptional workmanship, so please don’t take my comments as criticism of your work, but instead as thoughts for rifles down the road.

Joe, Yeah I'll be bringing it for my annual green ribbon.   ;)

Getz, I got it from the Beck gun in the archives on this here very website, wonderful resources here.

JTR, I need sights I can see, I build 'em to hunt with and want to see them.  Still young enough to put the back one as far back as I can get it!   ;D

Thanks for the comments.  Some of it, like the nosecap and brass lock are just stuff I like and wanted on it, not too concerned about exact replicas.  Trigger I never thought of, I'll look at that and some of the other suggestions on future guns.  Some of it was just how it came together and how much room and wood I had to work with, they never seem to go together exactly like planned, but that's half the challenge I guess.

I'm not sure if the carving is right or not, but from that last photo, I sure like the carving along the edge of the barrel channel.  I think the antiquing is quite nice as well.

My only suggestion would be to tone down the shine a little.  A little too much contrast between the shine of the finish and the patina.

Again..... the lock panels.  I've built about 40 guns to date, and I still have to make myself slim them down to this day.

Last item..... in that last photo.... it looks like your rear sight is on backwards??

Nice job, all in all.

Dane

Dane, you'll have to ask JP Beck about that sight.  That last photo is of his original from the archives for comparison on the forearm carving, sorry if I wasn't clear on that...

OK,

I'm an idiot.  No wonder the patina looked so good.  I couldn't figure it out, because I didn't see that on the other pictures of your barrel.  And now, looking back, I see your barrel is browned, not antiqued.

Is there any way I can just withdraw my last post??

Dane....I was about to complement him on his carving, also the neat patina he had on the barrel.   I was also going to
comment on having the rear sight backwards.  I would be willing to bet that J.P. did not put the sight on that way.....
someone along the way did some restoration on it and screwed up.   As for the scallop type carving along the barrel, I
cannot recall ever seeing this in any of the books in print, that's why I made the statement.  I must admit, it is some good
carving.   I like almost anything that he did.   As for the gun I was being so critical of, I was only pointing out things that
I thought should be done differently.  When you build a gun, it's yours and you can do anything you wish.  I was never
really very creative, therefore, it was much easier to copy an original.   The thing that makes that good is how well I was
able to accomplish this.  Most of the times it was not really that good.....seems like I was never really that happy with the
carving.  That's why I now enjoy building barn gun, how can you really screw one of them up.   By the way, I'll have a new
one at Dixon's....just waiting on finish to dry...............Don

I really like the model you've chosen to emulate, and you've done a nice job on your rendition of it.  Your photos show you have a lot of talent.  I hope you can learn from the comments made and incorporate them in your next rifle(s).  I personally have gleaned so much from these contributors and this forum, that it forces me to concentrate on making it better next time.
I have a Getz 50 1/2" .50 cal smooth rifle Oct/round barrel in a piece of hard cherry for my go at this fine rifle.  I knew I wanted one as soon as these pictures were posted, and I have saved them in files so I can pour over them at my leisure.
Keep up your good work, and thank you for posting your pictures.  Congrats are due!!

Yeah, I did notice that and felt pretty good about it!  :)  And no Dane, it's gotta stay hanging out there for all to see.   :o

Taylor, me too.  It was just so different from other Beck's I'd seen in books and I just happened to be planning a Beck so it all worked out for me.  Funny this is two other guys in our building group also are doing Beck's, one based on the same gun, and all three are turning out to look very different.

Thanks for all the comments.  This is still only #4 for me, but I feel like I'm improving on each one.

Real sweet looking rifle. I'm certainly no where near as experienced and the others around here but I'd be proud of that piece of work, especially for your 4th gun. It's real nice to see  that folks can offer some constructive advice so we all can get better too!

Osprey.....despite all my negative comments, you did pick a good gun to copy.  I have always been a big fan of J.P.Beck
rifles.  There are certain things about a Beck that you don't find in other Kentuckies.   First off, when you shoulder a Beck,
it almost feels like a modern rifle.   I think that is because of the trigger guard rail which almost touches the wrist of the
stock and it gives you a feel of a pistol grip.   I have also always liked his bold carving and you have done a good job in
copying that part of the gun, I like it.   I thought it might be in my best interests to say some nice things about your gun,
just in case you are a big galoot, and me, being the old f____ that I am, might not be able to defend myself.........Don

Osprey....you sure have a way of shooting yourself in the foot, If you are friend of Jerry's, I can see how you could get some bad habits.  He'll probably be at Dixon's and I can defend myself from him..................Don
