Super handy tip
« on: November 23, 2019, 08:06:14 PM »
So, I found a super handy tip that I just had to share.  Despite your best efforts,  sometimes a ramrod hole may wander or you get a messed up pre-carve, and you might end up with a barrel lug, or the forward lock bolt interfering with the ramrod hole. Some people taper the end of the rod drastically, or notch the lock bolt. I came across a better solution.  You basically take a steel rod the size of your ramrod hole then grind/file the end into a bullet shape. Heat the end up to red hot, and push it down the ramrod hole a few times until it clears your issue.  It will burn around it, and make the clearance you need. Works great!! Just keep a pair of vice grips and a hammer handy for extraction.

I have! I guess Justin is showing us how a blacksmith would build a gun.  :)  You will  not have to do that with the inlet I just did for you, providing the package makes it through customs.

Thanks. It's a NC tool Whisper Momma forge. I've had it for about 15 years. It's been great, but it's getting close to time for a new forge.

I should do a blacksmith gun one of these days, Dave.  A rustic thing, with forged furniture. Something a blacksmith would build,  kind of like that rough one you did a while back.

It sounds interesting but if I tried it in my shop Id dial 911 first and ask for the fire dept then proceed. But I like the idea a lot.
