Louie Parker pistol on www.kentuckylongrifles.com
« on: July 17, 2009, 11:06:42 AM »
There's pictures of a beautiful kentucky pistol  made by Louie Parker at
http://www.kentuckylongrifles.com/html/louie_parker.html

The pistol is his interpreting of four pistols made by 19th century Georgia gunmaker, Wiley G. Higgins.
Where can I find more pictures of Parker's pistol and Higgins originals?

Best regards

Louie is a member here, you might ask him that question.

Rolfkt, in the KRA book "Selected Articles from the KRA Bulletin vol 1-30" there is a good article by Dan Wallace on the Higgins clan with photos, also some other photos of one or more Higgins rifles in another part of the book - my copy is out on loan right now or I'd be more specific. Excellent book, great information.
If you have a copy of Kindig's "Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in its Golden Age  - page 334-336 is a Higgins rifle that at the time Kindig thought may have been made by J. Lowmaster.
In Jerry Noble's "Notes on Southern Longrifles vol 2" there are photos of 2 Higgins pistols and several rifles including the Gamecock Rifle and the only iron mounted Higgins rifle that I am aware of.  Volume 1 has a couple rifles including the one with a pistol grip stock. Vol 3 has several pages of photos of the pistol that appears most similar to Parker's.
My copy of "Steel Canvas is also out on loan, if I remember right there is a good color photograph of a Higgins rifle in it - can't say for sure, maybe somebody else will know.  And check out the American Historic Services web site, there are photos of the Gamecock rifle there along with some good information from Wayne Elliot

Rolfkt

I can send you photos of my pistol, is there something in particular that you want to see ?

Of the orginal pistols I have digital photos of only one. It happens to be the finest of the four, the only one with a cast trigger guard, some gold trim and better workmanship than the others. To send you these I would need to get an OK from the owner, but don't thank it would be a problem . The photos of the other three guns are hard copies, If I can get them scanned , I could send you those.  Let me know what you need.
I know of only four of these pistols, is anyone aware of others ?

For your information one of these pistols is in the Hermitage in Nashville Tenn.,one in a museum in Texas and two are in private collections,........Louie Parker

Louie, I only know of four Higgins pistols that have turned up so far.
Ian did a good job above of listing where photos of Higgins rifles and pistols can be seen.
The Dr. Joe Davis rifle, pictured in Kindig, is beautifully pictured in "Steel Canvas".
Let's find some more originals, guys.
In the meanwhile, Louie has shown he can create a pistol that Mr. Higgins would have been proud of.

Thanks Louie for your kind offer. It's a beautiful pistol and very different  from most I've seen.

Could you send me big (high resolution) pictures of the whole pistol, both lockside and side-plate side. I'd also like pictures of the barrel tang area and the underside of the pistol showing thimbles, triggergard and butcap. The pictures on www.kentuckylongrifles.com are small and it's hard to see details. I'd also love to see pictures of the original pistols. I live in Norway and museums in USA are a bit far away to visit.

Ian, I tried to google Jerry Noble "Notes on Southern Longrifles vol 2". Could not find anyone for sale. Do you know where it can be bought?

Best regards

Jerry sells them himself, not through any stores etc.  You can call him at 309-582-2852.
