I like the 5/64" idea so you can drive out with 1/16" punch. Just ordered 3 36" pieces of music wire from Amazon for $11. They have 1/16" also.

A punch for 1/16 is actually a bit undersized.  That is if you want to drive out a 1/16" pin a punch sold as 1/16" will work fine.

We use 1/16" music wire, which we buy in bundles from McMaster Carr.  We draw back the temper in a furnace so they can be cut with ordinary tools.

I usually use 1/16 brass rod from McMaster Carr. It is plenty strong enough to hold a forestock to a barrel or ramrod pipes and triggerguards to a stock. Cuts a lot easier than music wire. The wood will break before the brass rod does.

I've used a lot of different things for pins over the years. I prefer music wire. A cut off wheel in a Dremel to cut them. That is the only purpose a Dremel finds in gun building for me as a rule.
