Sqrldog's latest new rifle
« on: December 04, 2019, 03:22:25 AM »
Sqrldog's new rifle.

I have been working on a C. Oerter rifle for my brother Alabamian. I am finally getting down to the finishing stages and will be delivering it on this coming Friday. Brother Sqrldog seems to have developed a fondness for these early rifles and I am glad he considered me for one of his builds. We based this rifle on the 1774 rifle on page 105 of the Moravian Gunmaking Vol. II. I did vary just a tad, I used sterling silver wire instead of brass and the star is also sterling. Anyway I hope you enjoy the photo's.

That’s a real beauty. I’m a huge fan of that CS stuff.
Another new gun for old Sqrldog huh? Now that part hurts! I keep trying to “Keep up with the Cosby’s” but it’s just not possible. I recon that I’m gonna have to quit trying  :(.
Great job Jim!!

I feel blessed that this fine rifle will reside at my house.  I will get to use it, admire it and enjoy owning it. Then when that time comes pass it on to my sons and through them eventually to my grandchildren if all works as it should.  Jim is supposed to shoot the rifle today and get the sights set fairly close. Then Friday Jim will come down deliver the rifle and deer hunt for a day or so. I plan on hunting with the rifle if all goes as planned. Jim has been a friend  since the early 1980's when we met at the black powder shoots here in Alabama.  I feel fortunate to acquire a great rifle made by Jim but even more fortunate to call him a friend. Jim thanks for a great rifle.

Now Brooksie you know you still own an Oerter based rifle. Maybe triplets?  Nay I don't think so. Stoner compared to you I don't even count when it comes to collecting Contemporary rifles.

I did shoot the rifle today and I am happy to say that it shot like a dream. Brother Sqrldog had me sight it in with 120gr of 2F and a 590 ball. All I can say is it was pleasant to shoot and it grouped well for an old @$#% that don’t see as well as he used. Sqrldog I don’t think you will have any excuses if you miss a deer with this in. 😜

A Beauty Jim, the wire work looks like it grew in with the wood and that engraving on the BP could not possibly be better.

Yeah, what they said! You did a great job on that Oerter/CS rifle! Youre difficult wire work is very well done!
Is it a big robust caliber like the originals?

Tom, the rifle is 60 cal and very pleasant to shoot because it is a fairly large gun but not that heavy, 8.9 lbs.

Also Tom, I learned to do wire inlay from one of the best ever at putting wire in a stock, Frank Bartlett. Frank did not let many folks in his shop and let them watch him work. I will never be able to do wire work without thinking of Frank and the time he spent teaching me.

Such a beauty...I saw it posted over on Instagram, too. Impressive work, and I hope ol’ Tim will bring it to Lake Cumberland, or let you bring it!

Santa Claus (Bama) just got to Ramer with my new CS rifle. I must have been a much better boy than I thought I have been. The rifle looks even better in person and yes it will be displayed at Joe Wheeler in January.  Bama said it will also be at the Cumberland show provided he can get me to let go of it.
