Here the buckle has been attached.
The end of the strap was cut narrow so it
Would pass over the buckles bar, a slot was cut
For the tongue, awl holes were laid out and
Poked in and the buckle sewn on using a two
Needle harness stitch and waxed linen thread.
A keeper will be added later, but next both
Halves of the strap will be sewn to the back of
The bag.

Here holes are ore awled into the end
Of the strap first then transferred directly
to the Back of the bag. After that it’s a simple
Matter to see it on. Just be sure you do not
Poke any holes through the front panel of the
Pouch if there is any overlapping along the edge
Of the strap.

And finally here is one of the strap pieces
Sewn to the back of the bag. Notice how it’s
Set at a slight angle. This helps the strap
Confirm to your body better when it’s worn.

Once the strap ends we’re attached,
An extension was sewn on. It’s cut Narrow enough to
Just fit through the buckle. Frank Barker
Showed me how to make straps like this.

After the strap is completed the
Buckle Tongue holes are punched in
And the Keeper loops are added at the
Buckle end.

One quick question sir, if you don't mind.

How much of a seam allowance do you use on the body of the bag?

Many thanks. I'm enjoying this tutorial immensely, especially the strap work and buckle attachment end.

Hi David. Good question. I generally
Allow just under a quarter inch for a turned seam.
Thanks for following along.

TC:  that's a clever way to sew down the keeper aft of the buckle...the one on the wider strap.... thanks for that neat tip.

Thanks for all the good comments.
They are much appreciated.
I will try to answer a few questions here
If I forget one please keep bugging me and
I will. Sorry in advance.

The bag size ended up 9 1/2” x 7 1/2” . About
A half inch or a quarter inch per side was
Lost in the seam. But yes, it started about
10x8 on the pattern. Each hide may or may
Not shrink too which is something to be aware
Of. That’s why I always fit and attach the flap
Last. There’s no real way to exactly pattern it

The strap on the original sure looks like it’s
Captured in the top edge of the flap seam.
I would expect that because it was a very
Common way to do it. My copy will use a
Flap hinge though so the flap opens easier.
So my straps will have to be attached to the
Back.

The side reinforcement pieces are made from
The same leather I used for the body panels.

And finally there is a hanging pocket
In the back. It’s attached by seeing it
On when the flap hinge was sewn across
The top of the back panel. Here are a few
Images of that pocket. It was requested
To hold tow and cleaning jags.

Thanks for posting.

By the way, the way you write in Stanzas makes me want to read it in iambic pentameter. I hear Shakespeare when I’m reading. Gives your words gravitas.  ;)

Now that there is funny.
Any gravitas is purely accidental
I assure you, and more
A result of the tiny screen
On the “I phone se” that I
Have here to scribble with
Than any poetic intent or
Skill on my part. Though
Me thinkith it a worthy
Consideration indeed and that
Perchance I should endeavor to
Do as ye suggest.   A pouch,
A pouch! My kingdom for a pouch.

I don't know if this can be considered a tutorial but I am making a pouch very similar as this one that Tim has posted. I keep referring back to it and I have to chase it down as it ascends into the depths of the other posts. I do hope that the Moderators will consider this and move it to a tutorial in the accouterments section of this page. Thanks Tim Albert for sharing your vast knowledge in leather smithing.

Thanks and Regards
Frank Barker

I love it!!
There are many fine bag makers on this site but what makes T.C. so unique is that he is able to put his teachings into words and pictures that makes it easy for a novice to follow along.  Not everyone has that skill.  I compare it to Peter Alexander's book on rifle building and Shumway's recreating the long rifle.  Although both are great for the beginner, Peter's is easier to decipher due to the use of pictures and good writing.
My hat (not that I wear one) is off to you Mr. Albert.  You have inspired many including myself and I thank you for that!

Tim.... I have made a pattern for this pouch to be used at a later date and I was trying to figure out how wide the strap was and what size buckle you used. Carolyn said to just ask you how wide the strap was and what size buckle is, that you would be glad to answer those questions for me. So I went back to read one more time what you had originally written and just noticed my name in your post. Now I'm ashamed to ask you as I should already know.  ;D ;D ;D   I could hide my own Easter Eggs.

Kind Regards

That’s a good question for sure Frank,
And I am the embarrassed one since I
Don’t know the answer. I honestly just
Fished the buckle out of a box full out
in the shed and built the strap around it.
I believe the wide parts of the strap were
About 2” and the buckle about 1 1/2” across
Which made the narrow strip about an inch
Across. But I’m just guessing. Maybe Smokey
Could post the measurements here for us
I apologize in advance for not knowing, but
I honestly just build a lot of this stuff by eye.

Tim..... I have one more question. Did you dye the pouch both on the inside and out ? I normally dye my parts before I sew them together but I am going to try your method of dyeing after assembly. I am making a couple for 2 friends of mine but I am putting a gusset in them.  Thanks Tim for sharing your vast knowledge so freely.
Kind Regards

Sorry for the late reply Frank.
I do dye the inside of the pouch too.
At least all I can reach. I use the same
Sponges and rags I dyed the outside with
And they are generally still so saturated with
Dye that by wetting them and just rubbing
Them against the inside it  Takes plenty of color .
Remember I’m using water based  dyes not typical
Spirit stuff like traditional Fiebings.
After that I sometimes apply a leather cream inside
and out, like dr. Jackson’s hide rejuvenator
And that’s about it. However, after all of that I
Often find myself wishing I had colored
Both sides of the leather before I began sewing.
Hope this helps some
Tim
