A fellow posted pics of a new "Hawken" he picked up. It's built with a large Siler lock.. notice anything odd about that single lock bolt???

Yep. Right through it. The guy said he's fired it 50 times. It's about 50 more than I would. It is a .54 cal Green Mountain barrel.

Looks like it goes through the breech plug or threaded part of the patent breech.

I don’t see sign of a patent breech from this angle...but I think it likely goes through the breechplug threads. My dear departed Daddy would say, “two fools met...one for building it, the other for buying it”.

Some people’s children shouldn’t be allowed to use tools...

To me it looks like the bolt goes through the breech plug threads pretty close to the face of the breechplug. If it's a typical breech plug, there isn't a whole lot of metal between an explosive charge, and the bolt hole

WOW!!!! Even with a 5/8" breech plug, not good. Not good any way you look at it. As Greg said, some people should not use tools.

In all probabilities the person that built that rifle is very proud of his work and working on another build. The person that bought that rifle probably bought the rifle got for the price of the parts or less and is thinking "man I got a steal on this rifle".

As much knowledge that is available today it amazes me to see this type of work. Please say that you made a comment on the FB page that the rifle should not be used.

That's pretty cool....in my nearly 50 years of fooling with muzzle loaders I've never see this. Is it just me or does that drum and nipple seem quite a bit foward?

I thought the same thing wobbly. I enlarged closeup of breech, looks like a flint style patent breech for the hook. I have used this arrangement, with drum and nipple on a Plains style build, but DANG sure haven't pulled this stunt. If plug is solid,and I hope it is, and the drum is just forward the face of the plug, hopefully there are a few solid threads before screw passes through. man,whatta chore drilling through all that.
Sad thing here,to me, is, as much work building and fitting this type or gun is, some time spent on educating ones self, preferably here, would be well spent
Reminds me of a similar style 58 cal with a 5/8-18 plug.

I told him that I thought it should go on the wall, or should be taken apart to salvage the good parts.

I've seen a couple done that way, but usually back at the end of barrel, not a big problem, never that far forward!!!! It should be a wall hanger only.

Maybe the guy built it that way for easier cleaning...just run the hot water down the barrel an if he drilled it REALLY good it runs out the lock bolt hole....ha ha ha ha...Seriously No way would I shoot that...! Oldtravler
