I put it in the vise this afternoon..So treres no turning back... ::) guess its next in line. It will be a 45 cal. Flintlock. still studying the lines for style. I know its going to be trying being a little softer than I'd like .. But here we go..

Nice collection of chisels and gouges.  Looks like it could  be a little dangerous to reach in and grab one! Good luck on the project!

Make it a thing, make it great.  Make the market demand MOORE!

I have acres of Sassafras.  ;)

I'll probably saw some for lumber in the future, and I have seen doors and cabinets made of it by a local woodworker.

This will be interesting to see your project come together.  Now that's something new, I never thought of an ambidextrous  grease hole for left of right handed shooters before. You could be onto something there ;D

A bonus with sassafras is it smells good when you work it. It makes good laminations for longbows and looks great under clear fiberglass when flat sawn. I'm anxious to see this one completed.

I've never seen a vise like that. Can you give us some details?

Patternmakers vise.   Woodcraft and others sell them.  Great vise for a gunstocker!

Don't let the hardness- softness bother you, I once apon a time carried a rifle with a mahogany stock and it stood up to quite a beating. I have also sat on some beautiful sassafras boat seats.Clint

Yes it is a Patternmaker's vise. from Woodcraft. I love it. I don't know how I did it before i had this one. They run a sale on them couple times a year. Get one you'll feel the same...promise.

Hi,
Looks like an interesting project.  I find it better to trim the top of the stock down close to the outline from my drawings before inletting the barrel tang.  That way there is little wood to risk chipping out every time I pull the barrel out while building and my inletting is better because I can see if gaps are forming. Your lock seems to be placed very high on the side flat of the barrel although it may just be the perspective of the photo.

It isn't the picture, the lock is way too high. You should have trimmed the forestock wood down to about mid level on the side flat and placed the top of the pan at mid flat as well.

I'm afraid I agree with Eric and smart dog.
Flintlock is the only truly reliable source of ignition in a muzzle loader.

Tho it looks that way... Its aligned perfectly to the center of the side flat. It does look high on the picture but I do stress myself on making sure the pan will be dead center on that flat. No Worry's..

The top of the pan should be on the centerline of the barrel. It looks like you have the bottom of the pan on the centerline.

It has toxicity. That's your headache. Many exotic woods are toxic too and they vary in potency. It's good to know before you put something to a sander if you weren't aware.

Wyoduster,  I would not panic over the lock setting.  As long as the lock plate does not protrude over the edge of the barrel flat, it will work  A vent hole at the bottom of the pan has been demonstrated to be just as fast as a hole at the top of the pan.  Larry Pletcher did this very scientifically and published it on His BlackPowderMag site.   I do not fully believe it myself :-) but certainly it is better than throwing the stock blank away or trying some weird fix.
kind regards, heinz

Well one thing you can do since the lock plate is inlet high, you can grind the pan deeper. But I would not do this until I had my vent liner installed. Then you will have some type of a reference to go by if you decide to make the pan a little deeper to compensate for the high lock plate.
Good Day, Gordy

I personally like the touch hole real close the bottom of my pan.

With that placement you are going to have ton of extra wood in your forestock which will make for a really clunky looking gun. The wood alongside your barrel should be at the half flat height or less for a slender looking gun.

He can still take the sides down. He’ll just need to file a bevel on the lockplate to get it to match up cleaning. I’ve seen that done a few times.

Wyoduster, that should work fine, as long as your mainspring doesn’t hit the bottom of the barrel.
